Been grabbing old fence posts from around our place and turning them into walking/hiking sticks. Most of these are post oak and one cedar. Post oak posts were put in around 70 years ago, not sure on the cedar.

Excellent Tres. But remember to speak softly when walking around with one of those.

People have forgotten that, many times, all that's really necessary is good, stout stick! Well done. cheers

Thanks, and it is some stout wood. I wouldn't want to get over the head with one!

Great idea & re-cycle project! Do you just shape them down with a sander? Are they then coated with something?

Thanks, I rough shape them with a table saw if needed, then a draw knife, then a lot of sanding up to 1000 grit. Finish with a few coats of linseed oil.

I donated some old post and cedar wood to the prison woodwork shop probably 30 years ago. You would be amazed at what they did with it. Was some very talented folks locked up in there. Will try and find a wooden picture they sent me for giving them some wood to work with.

Been wondering if there is a market for used/aged cedar posts and stays. I'm removing old fence on the place, some of these guys are 50-100 years old. Could be used in taxidermy displays and other such.

Save them, never know when inspiration will strike.
