I am curious to know when the last legal black bear was taken in Texas?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Google says TPWD made bear hunting illegal in 1983.

From what I understand most were gone by the 1950’s.

They are very much back in business, in the Trans Pecos Region. I saw one just east of Big Bend park four years ago. Buddies are getting bears on game cams in Sanderson on a weekly basis, along with elk.

Yes, they are under reporting the numbers imo. They hit one a few miles from my place a few months back.

Hunters one on a neighboring ranch I hunted in real county in 07’.

Buddy has a place in Marathon and has had bears for several years now. Said they have kinda made pests of themselves

I did a lot of unsuccessful bear hunting growing up in southwest Virginia, would be nice to do some unsuccessful bear hunting here in east TX if the numbers can get back up for a season.

The long list of unprotected birds is interesting, wonder when most of those became protected? I guess a lot of them aren't migratory.

I thought that was interesting as well. Roadrunners were still on the menu.

IIRC prior to the screwworm eradication in the 60’s there were only around 300,000 deer in the state. Now there are around 5.5-6mill

I would look it up for you, but I have no idea what I did with the actual digest. I had ran across the pictures I took of it in an old thumb drive.

Had one tear a feeder to shreds while I was guiding, 'bot 10-12 years ago, and actually saw one get hit by pickup, on Hwy 90, just East of Comstock about 5 years ago. Bear was crossing, just the other side of a highway cut through a ridge at the crest and would have been impossible to see at even less than the posted speed limit. They aren't frequent in Val Verde County, but they are here.

One tore the heck out of a feeder on a lease I was on just 1 year between Sheffield and Sanderson (Terrell County) several years ago. 'Ranch manager had cell cam pics of it. 'Never saw one the 4 years we were on the Continental Ranch just north of there, but we were in 10K ac. of...high fence. flame
