Season is fast approaching, have a few candidates but nothing overly exciting. Hoping to get this 6 point into range, saw him last year but decided to give him a pass. This year he won't be so lucky. May take him or save him for a first buck for a kid. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-430216-mfdc4264.jpg) this buck is interesting....seems to have broke off his main beam while in velvet. He looks pretty young though, so probably won't make the cut

Far enough along is what I look for these days. Juat glad to be able to hunt some and not as crazy about it as in the past. I have become more of a meat hunter but still trying to get the wife on a good buck.

Ready to pop a doe. I will pop the first doe i see without a fawn on opening day just to put meat in the freezer. Got a ugly old deer with a spike on one side and something like chanterelles on the other that ran off my 6 point fawn. If I see him, he’s a goner. Other than that, i have not been to “my” public stand in almost a year. Hopefully “my” buck did not get killed and hopefully he will not be as wary.

"chanterelles." Thank you for teaching me a new word. I won't retain it, but...you...and I... tried.

They grow wild here. Mushroom hunting is a big deal around Missouri. All the hicks do it. Morels are gold.

We ate morels in Idaho. Damn good Yes sir, fan-freaking-tastic. I have to tell you, at least once in your life, you gotta kill a 6 month old fawn. Slice the backstrap into thin medallions because it’s too small to call it a steak. Roll once in egg, once in flour, fry about a minute on each side. Slice about two pounds of morels in halves or quarters length wise and fry the same way. I served it all up on the same platter, hit it with the tony chacheries. This is a bucket list meal.

I’ve killed a few doe fawns, never saw any issue with it. I did, however, stop eating flour fried things, so I’ll have to find an alternative. We ate morels fried in butter, buffalo heart the same way. It was delicious.

Checked cams today. Not seeing as much buck activity as I would like, I did see a good buck on the fence line the other day that is a bonafide shooter for our area. All feeders are going and have 3 cameras setup. Next week I’ll start putting up pop up bow blinds. Might have to scrap the recurve only plan as some of my sets just won’t work with a trad bow Have three shooters on camera, two are really culls and one is a representative 8 point for our area. This deer I’ll be happy to get an arrow into, normally I would hold off and let a kid shoot it, but neither one of my sons hunted last year so who knows if they will go this year or if they will bring a friend. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-430674-img_9711.jpeg) This guy isn’t much in the horn department but he is fully mature. I think he’s the same buck I tried shoot for about 2 hours last year and he busted me on the draw. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-430675-img_9706.jpeg) Carbon copy of the buck I killed in 20’. Very typical of the mature deer we have. Not really exciting to me and honestly would rather shoot one of the culls than this one, but he is a pretty deer. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-430676-img_9704.jpeg)

I'm ready to be ready. But, I'm not ready.Got the tractor overheating problem fixed last week, and need to replace bearings and a few disc's this weekend. Then pray for rain so we can plow.

This littke fella is back. I refer to him as the 6-point-fawn. He was still full velvet about 2 weeks ago. I am gonna let him grow a few years. Hopefully my neighbors will, too. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/download/Number/45931/filename/401FB962-D084-4080-BF46-E4C1A5FCB047.jpeg) I haven’t seen much else with any potential, other than a couple of big fat does. But this mean old mf is gonna get it if I can catch him. I think he recognizes the game cam. We only have a couple pictures of him, only in the edge of the frame. Sly old deer. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/download/Number/45932/filename/1C9D0663-7279-4952-BBAD-C8ACD12DA4E1.jpeg)

Got my last two pop ups in place, feeders set and adjusted and now just waiting until season. Pulled camera cards, haven’t seen much worthwhile all summer, the last two season I was seeing some nice bucks up until August and then it would flatline. The 21-22’ season was an absolute bust and the 22-23’ season wasn’t much better. I wounded ( I think I killed him but he didn’t leave a blood trail ) a small racked 8 point back on the last day of the 21’ season with only one decent shooter being seen that year. Last year I only saw one mature buck ( the old flat horned 8 in the picture above) but didn’t get to hunt a ton due to kids/work schedules. Pretty surprised at what I’ve seen, it went from not a lot of sightings of bucks to several being seen in the past 7 days: This guy is at the feeder everyday. He’s got a unique 8” long brow on his right side. Looks a little young to me, I killed a carbon copy sans the long brow in 20-21’ so I’ll pass, unless one of my sons want to shoot him. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-431443-img_9778.jpeg) Nice looking deer, but would probably get a pass from me ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-431444-img_9783.jpeg) This guy may be in trouble if he shows up….i don’t know if I could resist, he’s mature and has a beautiful look ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-431445-img_9785.jpeg) This one may be in trouble as well. Ten Points are rare in this part of the world. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/09/full-1562-431446-img_9786.jpeg) Put the cams away for the year, now knowing some decent bucks are circling. I may be hunting a phantom, I saw a real good buck the other day driving out and the neighbor saw one ( assuming it’s the same buck ) on my fence line. I have no proof but a gut feeling that he is around the house blind so I put up a stand there and will give it a few sits to see what it’s up.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I hope to be ready. The feeders are running, and the stands are up, although I probably need to do some trimming. I'm a little behind on shooting this year. I had to take my bow to the shop a couple of months ago and just got it back. I'll try to shoot a few times to make sure I'm dialed in before the first sit. Nothing impressive on camera yet, but I'm ready to be in the stand.

Im curious why you put the cams away. I use them more for a management tool rather than running surveillance on the deer. Looking for more of a "what is out there" vs. a "what is showing up at what time" I really got sour on using them a few years ago when I asked my kids if they wanted to go hunt and they replied with " I dunno, what is showing up on camera?". Mofo, go get your lazy arse out there and see what's showing up, don't rely on technology to tell you. I don't run any cameras out during hunting season.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
