Jeff Reed (fatalwishes)

Jeffry Bryan Reed, 45, lost his bitter eight-month battle with Burkitt's lymphoma on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at a hospice in Fort Worth.

Jeff was a curious, mischievous, fun-loving kid and never really grew out of that. He was always quick to amuse and to confuse. He would often leave you shaking your head. He could talk politics and guns 'til the cows came home. He took every opportunity to mentor young gun enthusiasts in the hope of passing on a continued appreciation of the right to bear arms. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved the outdoors and all its beauty. He loved his country and would do anything for his fellow man.

He knew a lot about a lot. He could talk to anyone about anything and often did. Jeff could have died a long time ago from any one of the crazy things he had done. He pulled numerous stunts in the military, though the stories are likely exaggerated. He worked for a spice company in his younger days and was electrocuted. (There is a funny story about muscle relaxers.) He had his share of motorcycle wrecks but always refused to go to the hospital. He had some close calls while hunting and generally causing trouble.

Jeff was very proud of his accomplishments in spite of what he felt was not a great childhood. He moved to Texas in 1986, after graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver, Colo. He then saw himself straying down the wrong path and joined the Army-Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant E5. He attended Mountain View College on the GI Bill and received his associate degree in applied science.

Jeff worked on helicopter avionics for Masco Service for 12 years while also pursuing his own successful computer business, Aftermath Computers. He switched careers in 2001 and joined Texas Pulmonary & Critical Care Consultants full time as the one and only IT administrator. Jeff married his second wife, Reta, in 2001. She faithfully put up with him for their 12 years together. He taught her that people are not scary and it is OK to love everyone. He taught her the value of a good hug. She taught him that dishes don't put themselves in the dishwasher, and there's no such word as "squoze."

Jeff calmed a bit with the birth of his son, Travis. They were best buddies, though Jeff never got to teach Travis all he wanted his son to know. He always told him to do his best and to be a good boy. He did manage to demonstrate the art of the belch, many times. Jeff's military brothers stood by him and remain dedicated to his family -- James Cobb, Carlos San Martin, Ray Martinez and Lupe Del Torro. They, too, should probably have died long ago from lack of good judgment in their youth. Good thing they pulled each other through.

The family would be completely lost without the love and support of their friends and neighbors (thank you for maintaining eye contact when encountering Jeff in the yard in his boxers) and adopted family of Texas Pulmonary & Critical Care Consultants. Words cannot express the gratitude for everything done and said on Jeff's behalf and for the family. The family wishes to thank the expert, caring, talented nurses and techs of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, Harris Tower 7th Floor, Med-Surg ICU unit and ER Department. They made Jeff's stays more than bearable. Big hugs to all.

And to his oncologist, Dr. Sanjay Oommen, you really should try to come up with good news once in a while. Just make something up. Seriously though, Doc, you did your best with what you had.

Jeff extended his family far and wide in his last few months -- reaching out to online strangers with his story. He was embraced with unfathomable compassion. Jeff looked for a shoulder and instead moved a community to strive to become better people, to love one another, to hug loved ones a little tighter. Jeff's life truly had a purpose and he served it well. Complete strangers have provided more than just words of encouragement and prayers. They provided a world-wide heartbeat from which love and brotherhood will beat eternally.

Jeff's family is honored to include the members of AR15.com, Texashuntingforum.com and Godlikeproductions.com as members of the family. Jeff was preceded in death by his good friend, Edward Louis Silva. They met in the hospital and became fast friends. They are partying now at the biggest tailgate party ever! Survivors: His wife, Reta of Fort Worth; son, Travis; stepdaughters, Alex and Kristen Ramirez; mother, Cheryl Puchrik (Tony) of Camas, Wash.; best friend, James Cobb of Garland; Reed family in Denver, Colo., father, Gary Reed, and siblings, Eric Reed, Crystal Reed, Sean Reed and Craig Reed; aunt, Jeanene Myers of Brownwood; and multiple cousins.

Opa Ely Jr. (mudduc)

From his son CCBIRDDOGMAN ... he was born on August 21st, 1943 and passed away on July 29th, 2016. He was a hunter, fisherman and jack of all trades. There wasn't anything he didn't know a little bit about and most things he knew a lot about. He loved to deer hunt but also loved to spend a weekend following bird dogs chasing quail just as much. He was my best friend and I miss him.

Jeffery Van Sims (JSims)

[Linked Image]

Brownfield, Texas
January 10, 1977 - May 20, 2022

Obituary

Jeffery Van Sims was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 10, 1977 to Louis Sims and Sally Barron. Jeff moved to Belton, Texas with his family at the age of 8. He attended Belton High School and graduated in 1995.

Jeff met the love of his life through mutual friends and after two weeks he proposed. One year later he married Erin Rebecca Creech on November 22, 2003. It wasn't but 3 years later that Kolby Van Sims was born.

After High School, and for most of his life, Jeff worked in his father’s family business, the local Napa parts stores. Starting as a delivery driver in high school, he quickly worked his way up to manager of the Temple location. In 2018 Jeff decided to make a career change in West Texas working at KLX Energy Services as a Maintenance Manager in the oil business. He spent the first few years living in his father-in-law’s camper and commuting back home. Jeff, Erin and Kolby then decided to move closer to his job. They settled in Seminole where they purchased their new home and started a whole new life.

Jeff, sometimes referred to as Jefro, was an avid hunter. During deer season he could be found in some field ,somewhere with a gun in his hand, usually at the deer lease in San Angelo with his friends and Kolby by his side. Jeff shared his love of the outdoors with his son. Today Kolby can catch it, hunt it, clean it and cook it, thanks to his father’s teachings. Outside of hunting you would find Jeff with Erin supporting their son in his after school sports and activites. Some of you might not know, but in recent years Jeff’s yard was his passion. He planted every seed in his backyard by hand and strategically watered it every day with his dog Ruger by his side.

He loved being in his shop under the hood teaching Kolby about his truck engine. Although he never considered himself a mechanic when he was young, he spent every weekend at the dirt track running the pit crew. If you ask Erin, she will tell you Jeff could fix anything.

Jeff made it a point every year to visit his favorite place in the mountains of Colorado. If you know Jeff well enough, then you know to leave the packing to him. If you packed, he would unpack, then repack in the Jeff Sims fashion, which was always cleaner, neater, nicer and way more organized…He was one hell of a packer. He would ride for hours in his ATV taking in the beauty, listening to Texas country and drinking cold beer. That was his Heaven.

Jeff was proud of his family and loved them with his whole heart. He left behind his wife, Erin Sims and his son, Kolby Van Sims.

Jeff's parents are father, Louis Sims and his wife Renee, Jeff’s mother, Sally Barron and her husband Randy.

Jeff had one brother, Justin Sims and his nephew, Jackson Griffin from Charlotte North Carolina.

Jeff was very close to his in-laws, Tooter and Susan Creech, their son Greg and his wife Lisa and his nephews, Noah, Cameron and niece Ava of Georgetown.

Jeff had many step brothers, Tommy, Bryan and Stephen Mach, Chris Jeff and little Randy Barron. Jeff also had multiple nieces and nephews that he loved to aggravate every chance he could. Multiple cousins included GW and Trevor Egbert.

Honorary Pallbearers are Kolby Sims, Justin SIms, Jackson Griffin, Bryan Mach, Pat Beach, Bill Barsh, Dustin Randoph, GW Egbert, Kris Wilbanks, Tru Avants and Curtis Blackwell.

In 1936, a Bulgarian-American woman, Rosie Oxner gave birth to William Oxner at home alongside her husband, Bryant Oxner, and her son, Marco. Siblings Louise and Mary Rose would later arrive. The family share-cropped cotton. They lived in a tent one year and lacked electricity for the first decade of Bill's life. They would later save enough money to buy their own farm.

Bill became captain of the basketball team, class president, and valedictorian of his high school-in a class of four people. He went to college and then to University of Arkansas medical school on scholarship. But then he shot himself in the foot, by which I mean, he literally shot himself in the foot while climbing a fence without his shotgun breached. It doesn't get much more Southern than this.

Bill loved his nieces and nephews, Mark, Greg, Stan, Scott, and Glenda.

Bill took a job managing regional grocery store account sales for Warner Lambert, purveyor of Schick razors, Listerine, and Benadryl. He lived in Houston singles neighborhood known in the 60's as "Sin City." There he and his friend Robert Hyatt met Paulette at the pool. Bill started dating Paulette. They also befriended Lorelei Sullivan, Barbara and Bubba Wade, John, Bob, Evelyn, and Virginia Hillegeist, Bo and Charlotte Kennon, Wayne Angle, Ron and Kiki Paschall, and so many more.

Paulette broke up with Bill when he wouldn't marry her. Then he popped up from behind her couch after she came home from a date. He proposed. They got married in Galveston, Texas. Robert Hyatt married Paulette's roommate, Donna.

The company moved Bill to New Orleans where Paulette gave birth to Cathy, this obituary's narrator. Bill dropped Paulette off at the hospital saying that there was no reason for two people to lose a night's sleep. He made up for it later sharing in all the diaper changing and doing all the nail trimming and bathing himself-and a whole lot of other things too.

The family returned to Houston and then Richmond, and Bill hunted or fished every weekend. He kept his guns in a locked case and believed passionately in gun control and campaign finance reform until the day he died.

He also cooked everything he caught-for everyone all the time. Bill loved to garden and to cook. Everyone loved his Trout Meuniere and his fish fries. He and Cathy loved the fried oysters the best. For some of his last meals, he ate fried oysters and another favorite, beef enchiladas.

Despite being sociable, Bill hung up every phone call between 30 seconds and three minutes without saying goodbye. He also often prank-called Cathy's friends-he would pretend to be Santa Claus or a Leprechaun. He would get down on his knees at the movie theatre and ask for two children's tickets. Whenever the pond froze over, he took Cathy in the rowboat to pretend they were exploring the Arctic.

As a result of this fun-loving spirit, he befriended so many neighbors-all of whom he loved-so many that I fear to mention them all and then accidentally leave someone important out. But he became close with his neighbor Sarah and her children near the end of his life.

Long before that, Bill hired famed trial lawyer, Elliot Tucker, and sued Warner Lambert at a jury trial and won. He then retired early to fish and take his bird dogs on field trials. His dogs performed well-at least one was a national finalist. He loved dogs so much-and he forced the family to watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua multiple times.

The family all loved to watch movies and to read. Bill had a condition known as alexithymia that prevented him from seeing emotions. But he empathized deeply with book characters and felt compassion for others when he was able to understand them. He tried to give money away to every homeless person he ever saw and sometimes gave money away to people whom he mistook for homeless when he misread the situation.

He lost Paulette to cancer in 2013. He later gained a son-in-law, Nicholas Baynham. Nick and Cathy ultimately realized that many of Bill's behaviors were consistent with the autism spectrum.

In 2021, a doctor diagnosed Bill with Parkinson's. After a bad fall, he came to live with Cathy and Nick in Macon, Georgia where Cathy was a tenured law professor and program director. Family friend, Cathy-June Hegdahl helped care for Bill in and his dog for a year and took him to the grocery store frequently, where he barked at dogs and asked ladies if they did their own hair.

Bill's adaptive Yoga instructor, Linda, home care professional, Jessica, lawn professional, Josh, and care professionals, Derrick, Tasheila, Alisha, and Cora all became friends.

After a doctor diagnosed Cathy with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, the family moved to Laguna Niguel, California to be close to her medical care. They took Bill to eat his favorite meals by the ocean, at the beach, and in the park. He rode the Dana Point Trolley around town. The family cat, Miss Kitty, purred on his bed, and he smiled and said, "She's kind of great." His little Yorkie, Muffin, still sniffed around his bedside.

He went to greet his departed pets, wife, and loved ones on the rainbow bridge on August 22, 2024.
