We applied for some hunts for my kid. Just checked and out of the 3 we're showing 1- "Pending 1st draw". 2- "Not selected", and 3- "Pending 2nd draw".

Being this is my first time applying in Texas, can someone inform me what the "pending" means?

pending first draw means they have not selected anyone as of now.

Not selected means you didn't win it.

Pending second draw means that they have drawn winners and if any of them choose not to accept the permit that will draw again for someone to win it.

If anyone's youth is Pending Second Draw for San Angelo State Park GDES, we will be declining that permit, so you still have a chance!

Looks like I missed all of mine, but my son won.

Looks like I get to do a little Keechi Creek Squirrel hunting. I'll be in that part of the state doing some other hunting then, so that will be a nice side gig with the dog when I am down there.

got a National Wildlife Refugee Squirrel Hunt at Trinity River Boars Den and 2 National Refugee Archery Deer Hunts one at Aransas NWR and one at Laguna Atascosa NWR

Got a Gus E. squirrel hunt and headed to LRGV NWR Teniente as well

I actually also drew Engeling for the last hunt period. I hunted the last hunt period last season also and I think there was only one or two killed out of the whole group. The population took a hit from the bad freeze a few years ago, but my understanding it has been improving every year since. I accepted the hunt, but it also is just a little lagniappe to some other hunting I plan to be doing in the area.

My son drew the Devils River SNA - Dan Allen Hughes hunt. Has anyone hunted there before?

Definitely try to reserve the bunkhouse unless you want to stay in a tent. It was below 32 one night we were there and a tent would have been tough. The nearest hotel or Airbnb has to be at least 1 to 2 hours away. I have hunted Devils River in the past but i'm not sure if it was Dan Allen Hughes. It's one of the best and hardest hunts that TPW offers. I would drive around your unit when the hunt starts and keep your eyes open. We drove up on auodads the first day and my son jumped out, got out the sticks and shot 2 in the first hour of the hunt. After that I would get high and glass. Spot and stalk is the best approach. There are tons of auodads and weird goat things. We also saw a really big buck too but not a ton of deer. Congrats and message me if you want to ask more questions over the phone

Those low number is why I didn’t go last year. But I was also solo. Got a buddy with me this year so might just make a leisure trip out of it to camp and get to see the area. Always wanted to see Gus and getting a lay of the land will help if I ever draw for deer.
