I’m 36 years old and finally saw my first horny toad. We have had this place for 8 years and this is the first year we have seen any.

I’ve spent tons of time all across Texas outside, and never seen them. Pretty cool

We used to play with them and trade them for cool stuff at jamborees.

Glad to find someone who knows what they are. Too many people think they are horned toads or horned lizards. But, those people generally aren’t native Texans.

I think Texas Parks and Wildlife has a restoration effort going on and have been transplanting some last couple years. Hope it works.

Used to catch a ton of them in Kenedy TX at my uncle's house back in the 1960's. Loved to handle them!

Haven’t seen one in years. What happened to them?

I've heard that the fire ants have had a devastating effect on them, and as the fire ant control efforts have had some success, the little horny toads are able to make a bit of a comeback.

They are awesome creatures. Grew up with them out in Midland, they were everywhere. Love those suckers.

When I was a kid in Elmore City, OK, they were plentiful. The kind old lady next door to my grandparents house would make "chariots" out of match boxes and we'd have a race or two then turn them loose. A little later, still a youngster we relocated to the Rio Grande Valley and they were plentiful there as well. I'm good friends with people are actively trying to get the little guys restored but they're still, unfortunately, fairly rare. Good to see a picture of one. Thanks.

Seen a few growing up in Clay county. Nothing here in Wise yet. They need plenty of harvester ants around to eat.

We have a bunch or red ants out there. I love watching their colonies and the highways they make all around it.

I've read that ant control also hurt them since it took a good food supply away. Every time I see one they are near a red ant hill.

Saw this fellow out in West Texas a couple weeks ago. [Linked Image]

We've had our new ranch in Santa Anna, TX for just over a year and have seen 4 of them. Lots of carpenter ants around here so I think that is what's keeping them in the area. We owned previous ranches in Marble Falls and Comanche and never saw a single horned toad

I’m seeing a shortage of horny toads, snakes and lizards on my place South of Bowie. By shortage I mean I haven’t seen any of them in years. When I bought the place about 35 years ago, all 3 were common. No snakes or even water moccasins in tanks.

I wonder if the hogs are eating them. They are not fast and hogs will sure eat a snake when they see one.
