Since hunting season is getting close, we will be cooking more at the deer lease. I like to cook with the Dutch oven. What are some things you cook in the Dutch Oven, and can you provide your favorite recipes? I am always looking for more things to cook out of the oven. I'm planning to try a roast next.
I cook 2 good common items in hunting camp in the Dutch Oven- Chicken Pot Pie and Cobbler
For the Chicken Pot Pie
One hole rotisserie chicken, shredded up One family size frozen veggies One small package of frozen peas and carrots (optional) 2 Large, family size Cream of Chicken soup Season with salt, pepper and garlic (to taste) 1 can of biscuits or croissants
Line Dutch Oven with foil or Dutch Oven foil pan insert. Combine chicken, veggies, soup and seasonings. Cook for 50 minutes with hot coals, stirring 1-2 times. Add biscuits/croissants on top for the last 10-15 minutes of cook.
My Cobbler is the easiest method I know. I make this all the time for dessert.
Cobbler Fruit of your choice- 2 jumbo fruit cans, undrained (15 oz), we make a lot of Peach, but cherry, apple, berry, etc, will all work 2 packages of yellow cake mix (save some for the top) add 1/2 cup sugar (optional) add cinnamon to taste (optional)
Line Dutch Oven with foil or Dutch Oven foil pan insert. Add fruit to Dutch Over, and when you add the cake mix, mix it just enough where it will stay lumpy and some of the dough is balled up in the mix, don't over mix it. The top it off with some cake mix and a few pieces of sliced butter on top. Cook for 45 minutes, or until done and top is crusted over. Enjoy!!
What are some things you cook in the Dutch Oven, and can you provide your favorite recipes?

Only thing I used my Dutch Oven for was peach cobbler. I used 12 charcoal underneath and 18 charcoal on top of the lid. Cooked for 45 minutes and the opened lid slightly for 15 minutes. perfect every time. This is one I cooked many years ago. Not a very good picture though. Photobucket pictures suck.

Anything you slow cook/braise at home. Venison pot roast or stew is great! You can also bake the heck out of biscuits and pies in one. I prep the pie or biscuits in a pie tin and then set it inside the Dutch oven to bake just like the oven at home. Here is all time favorite though and have had to cook these for groups and such many many times. Prep ahead of time and put in gallon bags. -Cut up chicken breast and or skirt steak in fajita sized strips 1/4 to 1/3 pound per person ( for a treat I will add shrimp in this mix too some times) -Put the meat in a gallon bag and add enough olive oil to moisten things up and then dump a good amount of McCormick's taco seasoning in the bag. -Close the bag and massage everything until it is coated with seasoning, put it in the cooler until ready to cook. I like at least over night. -Cut up a few different colors of bell peppers, long thin strips and some purple onion bag those until ready to cook and toss in the cooler. -I always make a good batch of home made pico -When ready to cook, get the Dutch oven rippin hot add some olive oil -Dump a bag of meat in and get it seared -Add peppers and onions and cook until the meat is just done -I like to have avocado, pico, sour cream, queso fresco, and serve with beans and warm tortillas -The next day the leftovers make outstanding quesadillas for lunch Here is a pick of some cooking on a flat top but I do them mostly in the Dutch oven

Grandad used to cook beef stew with vegetables. Set the dutch oven in the campfire coals in the morning while we went out and worked on the property. Come back to the cabin in the evening cold and tired and they stew smelled and tasted awesome! He also did peach cobbler and squirrel dumplings.

Yea Chad. Love me dutch oven Cobblers. Peach is my favorite but usually make at least one blackberry (fresh picked vacuum sealed from freezer).
Cornish Hens, Venison and Elk roasts with taters, carrots and onions. When I have them Pheasants but haven't been on one of those hunts in years. Hard thing is now with Blackstone is just so much quicker than good ol' Dutch.
I like your easy Chicken Pot Pie recipe and will give it a try.

All good ideas and Dutch oven cooking examples. We have done most of those and I have no idea how much Fish, chicken, fries and hushpuppies have been cooked in the Dutch oven using it as a fry pot on the propane cooker.

Using my Dutch Oven as a deep fryer was its #1 use. No telling how many lbs. of fish I fried in it.

Goggle Kent Rollins. He cooks almost anything on his cast iron dutch oven usually with coals or open fire.

Soup is always a good option, chicken , beef, potato, or even taco soup to mention a few. It will keep for a while and comes in handy if your out late or it’s cold out.

I cook cabbage with bacon and smoked sausage in a dutch oven. It's my main side when I cook meat on the smoker. I also do red or pinto beans (also with bacon and smoked sausage) in dutch oven.
Same process for both. Cook bacon in dutch oven, add onions, peppers and celery to grease and cook down, brown sausage with vegetables, add chicken stock and sugar, then cabbage or beans and season. Cook down for a few hours depending on how much time you have. You can cook fast or slow, either way it comes out good.

Cheapest white cake mix you can find, cheap canned peaches in syrup ... forget the rest but you just pour it in in layers without stirring. Cover the whole thing in coals.
Also ground beef, onions, carrots, potatoes to make a stew.
Pass the gravy.

I've done Cowboy Kent's beef birria for tacos in my Lodge, using their chart for how many coals above and below to regulate temperature.

I've done a breakfast dish with eggs, onions, bacon, sausage, peppers cheese and hashbrowns. Tried both layering it as well as mixing it all together, turns out well either way. I'll start cooking the bacon, sausage, onions and peppers first to get some grease on the bottom and sides then toss everything else in. Got a little careless removing the lid on this one if you'll notice on the right side.
