A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Looks like a typical Texas Rat Snake. A wider shot would reveal more of its patterns. Not venomous.

A helpful trick my wife showed me that she uses for shopping but I used for this is the following:

Take/save photo
Download/open google app
Tap the yellow “google lens” icon
Select photo to reverse search
View results

That basically does a reverse google search where it compares the phot you selected to other photos online. Results for this shown below:

Friendly snake.

I was thinking non venomous based on no pits, slight vertical labial lines, and round pupils. I only saw it because it struck at my dog. I let it pass.

Thanks much, folks, I do appreciate the help!

I had my .357 loaded with rat shot j n my hand but I am glad I gave it a pass. Still learning but getting more comfortable.
Even venomous snakes get a pass unless they show aggression or wander too close to the house.

Yep...Western Rat Snake (formally known as Texas Rat Snake).

Harmless, good snake to have around for the most part.

Yes they are….lol…. although I have not witnessed them going after birds on my place, they do…. I have rat snakes and lots of birds but I guess plenty of rats so I don’t ever see them going after bird nests…

^^^^^

Rat Snakes are opportunistic feeders....but it makes sense that IF prey is more plentiful and easier found on the ground, they will not go up a tree in search of food.

I have in fact seen them climb trees. But the ones I saw went into 'hollows' in the trees, presumably looking for squirrels or something else. Rats will climb trees also.

Rat snakes are the ones I see up high in my the rafters, porch light etc. I figure they leave less mess than a cat.

They are Kind of like road runners, they are great for rattle bugs bad for quail. Pick your poison
