I emailed pics to a tpwd biologist who then copied two other biologists and a tpwd vet but the answer I got kinda leaves me scratching my head. I’d like to hear some more opinions but they may be right.

With the recent rains and wetter environments I am inclined to think these are cases of Rain Rot or Dermatophilosis. This is a skin disease commonly associated with wet weather that creates too much moisture on the fur coat of animals such as cattle and deer. This moist environment then allows bacteria to grow on the skin which crusts and affects the fur. These animals should improve over the next few weeks as moisture dissipates and the weather gets warmer again. Cornell has a fact sheet about Rain rot in deer that can be found Let me know if there are any questions!

I’ve seen domestic animals with rain rot but never a bunch of deer. I would have thought for so many to have it that it would have to be something spread by mites.

saw this just yesterday at the Landa Park golf course. What’s crazy is I’m running 3 other feeders including this one and I haven’t seen this on any other places. 2 feeders on same property that’s 5 miles away and 1 other feeder that’s 8 miles away. It’s just this one place so I figured if it was something common due to weather conditions then I’d see it at the other places as well

Before I read below the picture, the first thing I thought about was flys.
