In four generations we've never seen a prairie dog on the farm. About five years ago they took over a bare piece of land on the North end of the county that the family has a gas well on. Last year, at the St. Paddy's Day parade in Shamrock, we noticed they had made it into town and were setup on the shoulder of the highway. Last weekend we spotted the first one on the farm. Well... my 13yr old spotted one with his 10/22. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/07/full-70421-425284-attachment_5.jpg)

I see a nice 222, 223 or maybe a 22-250 in the near future for that young man.

What's the typical range/distance when shooting Prairie dogs? At our property in Allison we typically start shooting in the 50-75yd range. After 10 mins or so they go in to hiding up close and you're looking at 100-150yds+ They seem to be more sensitive to two legs walking around than they are to bullets wizzing past but we're novices at this game so I'm sure we could be doing it better.

Very nice. Your young man must be pretty good with his .22 He shot that one at our Twitty farm. First sod-poodle we'd ever seen on the farm. He was about 40yds out and had the rifle laid over the top of a fence post.

Visited friends in Huch, Ks yrs ago. Praire dog village next to the WM and rail tracks. Fun to watch them pop up. Kinda like that kids 'whap-em' game or pop-goes- the-weasel. They were protected at that site. I understand why farmers don't like them.
