For those that grow cotton, not me, it is “kind of” free. When a lot fewer people fed it, it was cheaper. Many non target species don’t eat it.

We used to feed it to livestock, back when it was $100-120/ton. Producers couldn't hardly get rid of it. Now that everybody knows about it it's not really much cheaper than buying pellets, given that it's a hassle to store and handle if you buy bulk.

The gin keeps the seed and there is a big resale market in Asia for the cottonseed oil especially since Tx AM developed a new seed about 10 yrs back that has more oil in it , better suited for Texas dry land farming. Then of course the deer hunter market, which has exploded. We do get a "discount" on the bulk seed bc of our fields but it's still not even close to "free".

Of course, deer pellets have the added minerals and vitamins that deer really need. Cottonseed is just high in protein and fat. "IF" you can get cottonseed a lot cheaper, then it would be beneficial to use. But, cottonseed can add too much fat to a deers diet. Too much fat on a deer can hurt their organs in their body. Plus, cottonseed has a chemical in it that can reduce the sperm count in bucks. You are better off feeding protein pellets during the bucks "antler growing" season and feeding corn (which is basically "candy") during deer season.

It does have more protein and fat than corn and racoons do not like it I suspect for a chemical in it but they will not eat it. Might read this from 2020 https://www.ckwri.tamuk.edu/news-events/cottonseed-good-deer-feed-vet-says-more-study-neededI have not found it but several years ago a study conducted on Red Deer in England showed feeding cotton seed to red deer stags could stunt antler growth. Read that in one of the outdoor mags but do not remember which one.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

I did all sorts of research on this years back when I was feeding. The final decision was feed it, starting after the rut is mostly over, ie: the late gun season, and stop right before hunting/mating season.

We started it years ago - put it out at end of the season until start of the next season - as mentioned above it really helps them following the rut - it has bumped out body weights up significantly -
You can't fix stupid
