I’ve not shot a baboon but I have shot a monkey.
Baboons are nasty,nasty creatures
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I fought a monkey. They are strong and fast. I lost.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I've shot a couple in Zim and over a dozen in Mozambique for leopard bait. Nasty things. 'Always liked this taxidermy pose, but the War Department won't allow it. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2024/07/full-40213-425694-baboon_butler.jpg)

He took several. From what he said, they over run by monkeys & baboon. Creekrunner. Area he was @ think he said leopard population was down. Several other species. Grew up shooting gophers, pocket, stripes, & flicker tails. Did some prairie dogs on ranch. Would like help out with baboons. Miss the hog hunts. Best wishs

We had intentions of hunting baboons but they were uncooperative. Trackers would go out in morning and they were up on the mountain. No point in trying to make an approach. If hunting baboons have a plan B to hunt something else.

The place we hunt every year has a large troop (200+) of baboons about 3-4 miles down the road from their lodge where the owner of the property practically begs you to come hunt them.. for free...
they harass his cattle (his property is a mid sized cattle operation) and occasionally harass his staff..
They can be a real challenge to hunt there.. in the early morning you can sometimes catch them in the open field areas.. and get close enough to have a reasonably easy shot (100-200 yards).. but by mid day they usually head to the back of the property where there is a steep canyon (about a 90 foot drop to the bottom) and get on the far side of the canyon wall and then climb up in the trees... shots across the canyon are 250-400 yards and typically have to be taken off of sticks while standing or at best you might get into a sitting position.. theres not a place to lay down and go prone most of the time..
We usually try to get over there at least once every year while we are in South Africa for a few hours and make an attempt on them.. sometimes we're successful.. other times we're not..
My wife got a juvenile male last year.. nothing worthy of doing anything with.. but at least culled the troop by 1, for which the cattle farmer was happy... We're headed back over this friday for a week of hunting.. Im hoping one of us can connect with one of the big alpha males this year..

Olive Baboons from Cameroon. The PH I was with asked me to shoot them if the chance arose because they were playing hell with his oribi and red-flanked duiker. Since they were free I took some. Believe it or not they were the favorite meat of the trackers so they were really happy to see me take some. Pretty nasty beasts, I don't think I'd want to eat one but I was happy they were utilized. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/VqWQaqK.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/WpsnUKv.jpg)

agree with Braw2023, think it twas oranges that he put out fir bait. The monkeys came in first, he took several. Next day he set up a box blind (hut). The baboons came in banged on sides. Younger ones cae in first, then the bigger ones. He twas a little nervous. Think I'd have had me .45 They can tear a person apart, get over 100#'s. Personaly woud set back 100-150 yrds with me .17hmr, & me .45 on hip for back up. If .17 too small .223.

What's the go to cartridge for baboons? We only shot one. They're mostly a chance encounter when chasing other game and most hunters just shoot the weapon they're carrying. I can tell you a .375 H&H does a hell of a number on them. The farmers there hate them twice as much as we do feral hogs. Massively nasty and destructive creatures.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.
