Last week found me outstanding in my field yet once again. I mean, out standing in my field. Okay, actually I was sitting much of the time. At least until the hogs showed up. This is a 50 acre field that’s about <distance> across and <distance> long. Naturally the hogs came in at the far end, meaning I had to walk quite ways in the dark to get into a shooting position. Even worse, they were moving gradually away from me so it took a while to get close enough to shoot. I stopped several times to evaluate the situation and kept wondering if I would ever get within range.

Here’s the setup. It's pretty much the same as the last times except the field has been sprayed to kill vegetation. The terrain is gently rolling and having a chair in the bed of the truck offers a better view of some of the lower places.

I would have liked to have moved in closer, but eventually decided that I’d better take a shot before they wandered off the property. I selected a fairly large sow and, although it required more than one shot, I managed to put her down. A tape around her body just behind the forelegs measured 35 inches, indicating a weight of about 150 pounds.

I took the hindquarters and back straps, and once again I see sausage in my future. It’s a pretty good life! For me that is, not necessarily for the hogs.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

Keep on whackin' 'em! There's plenty more where that one came from, unfortunately.
