Had an issue with the recording not working on my sightmark mini so they are replacing it. While it was a 2x model that stopped working they said I could get a 4x model. Which would you choose?

I would get the 4X for a scope. I prefer a lower power for scanning but more than 2X for shooting.

definitely the 2X unless all of your shots are at 100 plus yards.

What Bigfoot said. I have one of each, but since most of my shots under 150 yards, I find the 2X the "go to" optic most of the time.

If your hunting out of blinds or shooting 100+ go 4x, if stalking and getting close go 2.

2x all the way in my opinion. Can always zoom in with the 2x, can't zoom out with the 4x.

And that is because the resolution is high enough that you can zoom the 2x quite a bit without the image looking poorly. In the olden days of DNV and lower resolution, that would not have been possible and 4x would have likely been the go-to for more folks because the 2x just didn't have enough reach and would not zoom well. It was easier to deal with too much magnification and a good image on native magnification versus too little magnification and a poor image when zoomed.

I've had both and much prefer the 2X, it has plenty of resolution for longer shots.

2x.....
With 8 magnification levels and the 2x max'ing out at 16x, you get a 2x jump for each level of magnification. The 4x has 8 magnification levels as well with a max of 32x, so it jumps 4x per level. And you'd rarely ever need more than about 16x of magnification anyway. If so, you better have one heck of an IR torch. Add to all of that, on the lower end 2x will give you more field of view for follow-up shots than the 4x would.

Okay y’all win, 2x it is.
Will say I was super impressed with service from sightmark. Hopefully it was a one off software glitch, but I mailed the scope on Tuesday and had the replacement in hand Saturday. Then I thought I was going to switch to the 4x and they would let me send it back for an exchange but I’ll keep it.
