I’m putting out a feeder on 20 acres. How many animals could I take from it without making them stop coming to it? I would be using only a bow at the feeder so there wouldn’t be a loud boom. This is probably a silly question but I’m still new to hunting. Thanks

With a bow I doubt you would have any issues at all.
You don't know what you don't know.........until you know.

In this scenario I imagine then killing of the animal would generate less pressure than the retrieval of it

Could be one, could be twenty. No way to tell beforehand.
Since you are a newbie I’ll give you some sage advice….don't seek advice from strangers on the internet. Hell, half the people on the THF don’t even hunt.
Trial and error and putting in the hours is the best way to learn.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Trial and error and putting in the hours is the best way to learn. Shots fired Trophy; no need to hold back! Personally I'd limit my urges to 1-2 animals taken but that's just me with my 45+ years of hunting behind me, lol. Conversely, you could go the way of our past podcaster - JT Procaddie, hunting afficonado hunting 10 acres or so in Hill country, straddling 2 county lines, nonetheless and commonly posted 3-5 buck kills from his feeder. Can you see my tongue against cheek in this post, lol..

Put your feeder out and hunt, stop guessing and get in the stand. Make sure your stand and the wind are set up correctly with the feeder. A couple of cameras help with movement. Don't over hunt the location, use scent control and have fun.

How did you measure this statistic?

How did you measure this statistic? It's just a gut feeling that I agree with. Many in the OT admit they don't hunt. Hell, one admits he never leaves the house. And he's right about not putting too much credence on what you read here. I have fun on here learning some things and trying some things, but...some ideas, preached as absolute gospel, turn out to be just flat-out wrong. I've saved a lot of $ on here too, but I've also spent quite a bit of coin with one or two on here that have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

IMO deer have become pretty reliant on feeders, or at least somewhat addicted to them. Killing one might cause the others to avoid it for a day or two but they'll be right back unless you kill every deer you have. Certain deer may pattern you but they rarely stop coming altogether.

How did you measure this statistic? Unfortunately, he is right. I have learned the hard way that we are not all likeminded on here and a bunch don't even know how to make a sandwich, much less process an animal.

This is how I look at it. Now, considering you are hunting 20 acres, you should be cognoscente of carrying capacity. 20 acres probably has the resources to support somewhere between .5 deer and 2 deer depending on where in the state you are located. If none of your neighbors hunt within one square mile, then you could probably fill all your tags and never make a dent in the population. However, if every swinging richard in that square mile filled their tags on their 20 acres, There wouldn't be many left for next year. I've been in your shoes with only a 20 acre parcel to hunt. The way I handled it, I'd pop a doe as soon as I could, and spent the rest of the year hunting for a buck. If I got a buck, great. If not, then I only took one doe for the year.

I've started a simple poll about hunting, first poll in a long time.

my experience of encountering strange situations with likely non hunters were in the off topic. I'm sure most people in this topic do hunt and who knows if they will answer honestly even if you put the poll in the off topic.

I shot a buck with an unsuppressed rifle last year that chased a doe past one of my feeders. There were 6 or 7 other deer around the feeder when I shot and of course they all ran off. 20 minutes later they were all back except the dead one laying 15 yards away. I sat in the stand and let them finish eating and leave on their own before I got out and walked over to check on the dead deer.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

This is probably a silly question but I’m still new to hunting. Thanks I have a little 45 acre property that I own and hunt. My neighbor helps care for the place and hunts it as well. He has been amazed by the deer and hogs that have shown up over the years. However, it isn't the size of the owned property that is the issue, but the area from which the feeder draws, which may extend well off property. My property draws from a two cattle ranches and a hay field that all comprise several hundred more acres. If you are on 20 acres and surrounded by residential subdivisions, I give you 1 season to over hunt your property. If you are surrounded by other rural properties, maybe adjoining a state or national park, you will be in decent shape until your neighbors add high fences.

How many animals do you want to take off 20 acres?
As I'm sure you're aware and others have probably pointed out a bow shot deer could easy make the boundary of a 20 acre property unless its shot in the spine of course.

I am an advanced military rifle collector , reloader and shooter . I can say without a doubt about 80% of the people on most military rifle boards have no idea what they are talking about . I built professional level race cars and motors up to top fuel . Most posts on car hot rod forums seem to be by 12 year olds . Somehow I do not think they were making more HP with parts from Auto Zone than I was with factory backing . A friend was a pro outdoor mag writer , he said one of the writers of many outdoor world wide hunting stories was a para in a wheel chair and did not own a gun .

Really depends upon how many animals you have in the area.
I've had buddies shoot 4 deer out of a stand on one day, and shoot another deer or two the next day.
I had a buddy shoot 3 out of a stand less than 100 yards from me and then I shot one a couple hours later.
But we have way too many deer around here.

My bet is you can shoot nothing at all and still see the effects of hunting pressure by the end of the season. Have had a feeder out at my house for the last 3-4 years. I haven’t shot or even hunted the deer at all. Every year I see the effects of hunting pressure like I had blasted half a dozen.

20 acres ? Tis it mostly woods ? Creek run threw it ? Walk the edges of boundary, looking for sign. Put your feeder away from boundary, good coverage. Set a trail came @ feeder. i like ta use a self climbing, chain on, depending on type trees. On leases were had feeders/food plots. Bucks were skittish. They skirted the edges, rubs, scrapes, does were the bait. Back off the feeder, so they get comfortable @ feeder station. Heavier trails,, usualy does. Use portable stand for observation. Can move closer, just enjoy time spent. Things will fall in place. Don't over hunt. Set up several stands, i run roughly 20+ cams. Buy cheaper ones, Walmart, had some for $20.00, they have gone up. as pappy once said : If ya waa learn how ta hunt, put down the gun & pic u the bow.i started deer hunting with a .45 Kentucky. Picked up archery few years later. Oldest bro built his own bow in high shool, parents used shot guns, party hunt, had pushers/drivers walk corn fields, had spotters @ edges. My dad passed away in 90's. My mom few years later. Asked oldest son if he would take her hunting, & help find her a crossbow. She still hunts, & enjoys getting out @ 90. i'm considered the village idiot. So me posts, bout Plenty of experienced hunters on here. Best wishs, & enjoy the 20 acres.
