My buddy and I were able to find a Javelina hunt in South Texas this winter. Planning on a full body mount so I don't want to do a ton of damage to it with my 6.5CM or .243 win. I was thinking of my old .22 Hornet. Having never seen one, let a lone hunted them, I'm looking at options. I could also pull out my .300 BO. What bullet recommendation would you suggest for the .22 Hornet?

Thoughts

Distance is not the issue, but the winds can make it interesting!

That are easy to kill. I’ve killed several with a 22 pistol.

Hornet will do fine with not much damage. I kill most with a regular 22 long.

Nice!! I have my buddies dad's old 1950's early 60's Savage 23D 22 Hornet. It was always a favorite of mine to shoot. I thought it would work great for them.

Luckily, I have a lifetime of ammo and reloading supplies for it. The ammo is still hard to find after the last shortage. Hopefully you have some already.

As others have said, it should work just fine... My buddy was archery hunting, so you shouldn't have any problem getting close either. They are NOT smart animals like hogs. Almost time one of us shot, they'd scatter and return 5 minutes later if you sit tight.

Curious what bullet do you recommend?

Hornady 35 Grain V-Max is what I use. I'm sure there's something slightly better for a cactus pig but that's my do everything 22 Hornet bullet.

Never killed a javelina but like others would not hesitate to use one for them. Hill country rancher I knew, a hornet was his truck gun he shot piles of critters with it over the years.

I have killed a couple deer with them, not my first choice but careful placement on hill country deer it will work at closer ranges.

Thank you, most all bullets I see are polymer tips and rapid expansion. Dang, the price of .22 hornet ammo is unreal! Good thing you reload!

It’s actually better than it was a year ago.

Don't over think it. They are as dumb as a box of rocks. Heck, I bet you could kill one with a Rock.

Very true. Every time I shot one, the herd would run off and return within five minutes. I stalked up on some with some Whitetail mixed in. Whitetail clocked me far out, but the Javelina were oblivious.

I recommend a 300 RUM or bigger.
The more meat destroyed the less you have to eat.

I have used a 218 Bee with 50 grain Sierras. At 10 yards it does the job.

You can.

A buddy of mine chunked a softball sized rock at one 25-30 yards away and conked it in the head. DRT.
