Had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon with a very localized downburst. Split a locust tree in half next to our deck. Planted that tree as a seedling 32 years ago 6 years before i even built the deck knowing exactly where i wanted it to provide shade from the afternoon sun while sitting on the future planned the deck. In the last 5 years was just really coming to serve its purpose. Have dealt with 100s of downed trees over the years but this is the first time in my life where a tree coming down has made me upset. At least no property damage but won't be replaced in my lifetime.

Bummer! Hopefully the tree will survive.

We had a sever line of storms come through a large part of N Texas about 3 weeks ago with a massive outflow boundary of strong sustained winds reaching 80+ mph, many trees toppled, most with some kind of damage. All the sidewalks are still stacked with fallen tree debris, the cities bulk trash pickup is running way behind because of it.

we have several big oaks down but they are out on the property so not a big deal. will go in and cut them up when it cools off and have maybe 3 cords of wood.

Dang shame about Hirogen’s tree. As for me, I’m still finding downed trees as I work my way out further. And like Hopalong, I won’t be short of oak firewood.

Hate to see that.

Had similar damage last week on a Silver Maple I planted 24 yrs ago.

It also had a significant 'fork' in the trunk like your tree.

Like your example.... it was very 'Limb Heavy' on the side that broke off. Almost certain to happen at some point.

Sorry about your tree. Hope you can do some sort of repairs and salvage it.

I have spent the last several weeks off and on cutting up very large oaks that went down in the storms... lots of them. Just killed a 2 week old chainsaw that I bought because my old one went down and I put it in the shop. Worked both their !@#$ off.
