There isn’t much in Mart. A DQ, a pizza place, a liquor store, and a couple of gas stations. But recently they opened a BBQ place. Only open on Thursday through Sunday, and they are open till they run out of BBQ, so we had never been in there. Well, today they were still open (guy said he cooked extra). Just to try them out, we got some trimmed brisket, some spare ribs, and some Mac and Cheese. The wife had heard that their Mac and Cheese was terrific. When we got home, I tried the Mac and Cheese, and it was the best I’ve had in recent memory. Then I got some of the brisket. Wow! It really might be the best I’ve had. He has a spicy rub on it. Just terrific.

If you are passing through Mart, and they are open, you might want to try this place. The brisket is 407 level. Can’t comment on the ribs yet cause the wife is watching me close.

I've been to Mart. Is that where the famous steakhouse was? Where am I thinkin' 'bout NE of Waco? About a 1/2 hour drive from Baylor?

I don’t know about a famous steakhouse east of Waco. There was a very good one in Marlin until the town administration let the water system totally break down for almost a year, which forced most all of the food places to close their doors. Even Church’s fried chicken shut down. There’s even less worthwhile businesses in Marlin than there are in Mart.

where in Mart is it located? That's a bit out of my way going to Fairfield but I don't mind taking detours for some good BBQ ...

It’s on the Main Street, across from the liquor store. We had the BBQ for supper last night. The brisket was terrific. The ribs were good, but not great. The Mac and Cheese was pretty darn good, but I think might depend on the consumer. We made a mistake by not getting any beans or tater salad. To be a great BBQ place, you need the good beans and tater salad.

It’s a long drive from Fairfield to Mart. The BBQ might not be THAT good.

"The BBQ might not be THAT good."

That comment reminds me of an exchange I had on a Facebook page dedicated to the old families of the southeast corner of New Mexico.
One of the gang, a horse packer and master chuckwagon chef put up a photo of some gorgeous scratch biscuits he had just baked in a cast iron Dutch oven.
"Lonnie, " I said, "if I had to I'd vote Democrat for one of those biscuits."
Without missing a beat:
"Bill, they're not that good."

You might be thinking of Heightmiller's (spelling?) about 30 minutes up 35 from Waco. Not the same since they moved. I can no longer recommend them.

Edited to add: Just checked "top steak houses in Waco." Heitmiller's came in behind Outback.

Mart is on Hwy 6 East of Waco. If you're in the area of Waco, Terry Black's just opened a new restaurant downtown close to Magnolia Market.
