My buddy has been wanting to shoot a hog for a while, it's on his Bucket List. He said he wanted to take photos which he could post on-line to irritate his liberal friends. I told him I was up for that, and last week it happened.
He & I are both ex-Army. I was in Vietnam, he's a little younger but was involved with the invasion of Panama when they captured Noriega during which he was wounded twice. Anyway, he's a good guy and I was happy to have him join me in going after some hogs.

We set up in a field that had just been harvested for wheat. This is the view looking south:

Deer came out as soon as the sun hit the horizon and bedded down in various places in the field. A sounder of hogs showed up around 10PM at the far south end. At first we thought they might be deer because they weren't moving around much. There were several 'large objects' and maybe a half-dozen 'small objects' visible through the thermal monocular. GIven that there were at least three other groups of deer in the field, I thought the 'objects' at the far end might also be deer. I figured the 'small objects' were simply the heads of deer which had bedded down. However, after several minutes of observation, it seemed that some of the 'small objects' were occasionally moving a little. We decided to move in closer and investigate.

It took about 15 minutes to travel close enough to make a positive identification, but they were indeed hogs. There were five large hogs and maybe ten piglets. We moved in with some trees behind us to hide our silhouettes and set up to shoot. The distance was probably about 100 yards give or take. My buddy took a shot and immediately put down a 110 Lb sow. The rest of the hogs started running, but stopped after going maybe 75 yards across in front of us. A large hog presented itself as a target at maybe 125 yards and my buddy shot it, too. I heard the bullet hit but the hog ran. It didn't go far though, and turned out to be a 185 Lb Boar. We gathered up the sow, placed it with the boar, and took this photo.

We kept the leg quarters and back straps. Two shoulders were shot up, but the other two shoulders will go on the smoker. The rest of it went into the grinder, becoming ground meat and sausage.

Another happy ending!

Good job. Awesome looking spot too. Much different than the brush country.

Well done! I think you have a new hunting buddy.

"Group think" is not thinking. It is the lack of independent thought. It is a cancer of the mind.
