I baited the hog trap yesterday evening. Plenty corn outside and inside. The grass on the outer edge of the trap was stomped down, but they did not go inside. The last big bunch of them here were stupid and easily caught. Not this two though. I hate smart hogs.

They are a lot smarter than deer. If their vision and hearing was as good as deer they would be hard to hunt.

Stop placing corn outside the feeder.

Yes, they are smart.

Okay, I'll divulge one of my secret ingredients. 'Got it off Hirogen on here I think, prepping a bear bait. Anise .$$$, but strong aroma in the wind. Just a few drops on the corn, only INSIDE the trap. After all, we all just want more dead pigs, don't we? Yeah, yeah "just plain corn," yada, yada. My numbers are comin' up buddy.

I don’t really put corn outside the trap, except at the entrance to the trap. The pigs apparently just circle the trap trying to get the corn that’s inside.

Anise, huh? I’ll get some and try it.

Same here. Just a little at the entrance.

I've used strawberry jello in a trap, and while I don't have a lot of data it did seem to help to catch one large boar that otherwise would never go in my trap.

1.
2.

Some get trap wise if they see other pigs in a trap.

I have used strawberry jello (outdated for humans, and cheap). All I can be sure of is that it can’t hurt to try it. And the sharp sweet smell travels on the breeze.

2nd night of baited trap, and no pig. I’m going to town this morning, and I’ll get some strawberry jello, and more corn. I’d just sit in the blind and shoot the dang pig, but it’s too hot.

Years back the government trapper that worked the ranch we leased only used brackberry Koolaid mix, no corn. He had good luck with it and the deer wouldn't go in the trap.
I tried it with not much luck.

We went through a spell where we would have pigs circle a trap and eat any corn that fell outside, but they would not go through the small opening, most box traps have a 2ft x 3ft door at best. They had learned from others or the small opening was intimidating. So I build a trap with a 4ft x 8ft door, the trap size was 8ft x 9ft. Man that thing will catch pigs, cows too.

'Currently conducting redneck research on powered peanut butter, that I learned about on here and is available at Walmart. (Way cheaper than anise.) Not sure about the pigs, but you can pull the deer in on a string.

Did you mean powdered or is this some kind of extreme peanut butter with caffeine or some other energy additive? Never can tell these days.

Yes, powdered, with a 'd' in the middle. 'Sorry about that. I'm running out of power.

My BIL used Anise on his plastic fishing worms.
He was a way better fisherman than me and always caught his limit.
I always put corn in a 5 gallon can and covered it with diesel for a few days before using as bait.
Seemed to work decent enough but maybe if I did a gourmet corn/diesel/anise....???

Cheers,

I do believe that I have a hog laying down in the trap. I’ll investigate, and take the 9422 with me. And might as well bring the hog dragging stick,

He was big. I let the neighbor’s kid head shoot him, and then we went to drag him out of the trap. We couldn’t do it. I decided to winch him out with the ATV, but finally had to go to 4wd and drag him out. 250 pounds, says my lie detector (scale). Biggest hog I’ve collected here, but the neighbor says there’s a bigger one. Check the cutters on this guy.

Easy to relocate. Bought it off a kid whose grandpa had made it from ISO tote frames. Today’s hog was chewing on the steel bars, but no damage other than wrecking my trigger mechanism.

I had an old boar one time that would not go into the trap. I poured some cheappo molasses on the corn. I had buzzard bait the next morning.

Great cutters on that boar. up

Good to have him out of the breeding population. Probably responsible for quite a few bacon seeds in his time.

Another note, if you kill the pig inside the trap, I find they won't go back into the trap for a while. We will often move the trap if we do and sometimes that doesn't work for a while.
