Picked up a new lease it’s pretty small only 160 acres, just wanted to see what everyone feeds in the area and if that area produces some nice deer? I primarily hunt Palo Pinto county and it can be tough, im going to set up a timed protein feeder and corn feeder in a pen to keep pigs out. . Thanks for any input.

Hunt small property < 75 acres that I own in SW Young county near Murray, TX. Genetics in Young county can be fair to surprisingly very good, depending on surrounding properties and their hunter selectivity of age class. Deer can be tough to hunt since lots of hunting due to proximity to metromess. I feed corn and some supplemental attracting protein in season. Good Luck!

As the crow flies, I have been hunting on a lease 10 miles west of you for over 20 years. DQ is right on. A lot will depend on what your neighbors are letting walk. I'm feeding corn during season and more recently year round some protein in a gravity feeder. But I only started the protein because I know two of my neighbors are also. Otherwise I don't think it would have mattered. I also started feeding the corn/soybean mix in a couple of my regular feeders instead of just corn for the higher protein. Be sure to stop in Clear Fork Country on 380 east side of Graham and check their feed prices if your not already buying it there. Stuffed in that building I think they just about have more hunting products than the entire hunting section of Cabela's.

Good to know, I’ve heard of them and J and S. I’ll check them out, I’m looking forward to seeing what we can get on camera, I only bow hunt so we will see.

Any particular protein you feed or just whatever is available? I saw J and S was a double down dealer, but I’ll check out Clear Fork. Where do you get your soy bean mix?

I just buy whatever they have or recommend. I could not tell you what brand or percent it is. I get the soy bean mix from them too. They have also been selling persimmon, apple, or peanut flavored corn for like a buck a bag more I think. Last I saw on facebook recently I think their corn was around 8 bucks a 50 lb bag. I think. Don't quote me on that. It was 8.99 during season.

Good deal, thank you I’ll check them out.

How far are you from an old cemetery near an old settlement known as Herrin City?

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I’m honestly not sure, I’ll have to look, I’m not super familiar with this area yet, my family is from Graham and I spent some time there growing up. My family owned the Bullock print shop in the square and I met several people that way but I’ve been away for awhile. Looking forward to hunting the area as I never have before.

I will share that rut is good first 1-3 weeks of rifle season, sometimes in Oct. during archery season which can be very good; have generally seen good horns during archery before bullets start flying. The late 2nd rut in 2-4th week of Dec. can be really good too for those younger doe not bred or in estrus during primary rut. Sniper is right about Clear Fork, Husky whom owns it has a very nice hunting shop, very good prices on corn and feed, nice hunting blinds and tripods and one hell of a animal processing shop. Believe Husky told me they did 1750 or so animal processes this past deer season. Lots of venison and the samples he gave me were very tasty. Too bad I didn't shoot at a deer last season, lol.

On our place the peak of the rut has been during the middle of Nov. It has been fairly predictable from year to year.

Own a place north of murray. I feed corn and double down year round. Keeps the deer around and the protein I'm sure helps during the dry season.

Don and Carmen were my adult Sunday school teachers for a long time and he printed my invoices for me before we went to electronic invoices, Fantastic people.
As for hunting, I'm about 5-10 miles straight north of you, We feed cotton seed and throw corn and have a tremendous deer herd right now. Great growth going with all of the rain, should be a great year for hunting in Young County.

Got a couple spots set up today with protein and corn. Stopped in at Clear Fork and picked up some feed. Hopefully will have some pics here in the next few days.

On the east side of the county, plenty of animals and they respond well to management if allowed to. Acorns are present in great numbers every year in our neck of the woods so when they drop you will see more deer away from the feeders than at them. Took a while for us to get used to that and accustomed to different types of hunting. Pressure varies but the more small parcels around you the higher it will be

Welcome to Young County, my ranch is west of Olney. We usually see a few nice 120's, maybe a 130 during the rut. Our largest buck taken on the ranch was right at 140 a few years back. That's pretty average in our part of Young County. We get all our corn, horse and cattle feed at J&N Feed store in Graham. Great prices, outstanding customer service. Best of luck to you!

Distance is not the issue, but the winds can make it interesting!

Can’t figure out how to get pics to post, but have a few decent velvet bucks hitting the protein.
