I heard the BBQ editor for the Texas Monthly -- who has sampled more than 2,200 BBQ joints in Texas -- on the Texas Standard yesterday saying the 'cue here is so good it had him rethinking barbecue. Who has been there?

We’ve been there. The food was very expensive. It was all good, but I didn’t think it was great.

Good BBQ and good steaks are more expensive than ever. Brisket is over $30/lb, pulled pork and pork ribs are somehow $30/lb, and sausage can get over $20/lb. Go to an upscale steakhouse, and a 16 oz Prime NY Strip will cost $75 and an 8 0z Prime Filet is $50 (with no sides). Factor in $10 beers, $15 cocktails, and 20% tip, it's no wonder restaurants are struggling to stay open.

If Louis Mueller’s was across the street from 407, I’d eat at the 407.

been there many times years ago, just not very convenient any longer. They set the standard years ago and trained many pitmasters that are now the new generation. Frankin's (Aaron), LA (LeeAnn) BBQ, Stiles Switch (Lance), etc.
I think these days it's more nostalgic than great BBQ from what I've heard.

Have not been there in a long while but it was very good then. Didn't the original owner pass away some time ago?

Been twice. When my son was in high school he ran at state meet his last two years. We stopped in Taylor and ate Louie Mueller on the way home both times. I ate the beef rib and finished it both times. Pretty serious rib. Melt in your mouth. Prolly good for me Louie Mueller is not closer. Both times it was excellent. Nothing fancy. A little pricey but what I ate was worth every penny. Sauce was a little different than I’ve had before or since but good.

It is definitely quality BBQ, but probably isn't in my top 10 Texas bbq joints. If I the Taylor area, I will eat there, but not go out of my way to eat it.

I grew up in Taylor and have eaten there more times than I can remember. I live in Georgetown and still make a point to drive there several times a month to eat. I am biased of course but I have never put better BarBQ in my mouth and have been to many places - Guy named Fred Fontaine was the pit master as I grew up eating there and he was an awesome person. Current owner Wayne's father ran it and was a friend of mine.
For me there is no better and there is a reason there is always a line of folks waiting to order (and what BarBQ or any meat is not expensive in today's world?)
