Since I put out the pellets a couple of weeks ago, nothing has touched them. Yesterday I bought some of the berry flavored stuff, but wanted to get the untouched stuff out of the gravity feeder. I drained about 20# on to the ground. It made a nice tall pile. Last night I have pics of the coons looking at the pile, but this morning the pile was untouched. It must have Kale or Tofu in it.

Maybe there’s too much greenery now for them to bother with the protein pellets. But maybe they’ll try the Record Rack berry flavored stuff. Heck, they aren’t even hitting the corn right now.

this time of year protein pellets are barely touched. Way too much spring green up going on, esp in the central and south Texas areas. North Texas is just starting but there is still some good stuff for them to eat and they ignore the protein largely until late June.

When it greens up here in South Texas, the deer only want those "greens." I won't start feeding pellets or cotton seed till early summer or if it starts to get dry. But I did put out mineral blocks around the water holes and the water guzzlers around our ranch. Now is the time to put out minerals.

I put out 5 of the blocks. Can’t tell whether that have been touched

We put out a little protein in January and nothing touched it. We filled it all the way up in February and nothing touched it till the second half of the month. Now the deer, even with all the browse, are hitting the pellets every day.

I just bought a protein feeder and filled with corn/soybean mix and protein pellets a month ago. Not a single deer has come to it, yet they come to the corn feeder (50 yards away) everyday. Is that normal? This is my first time feeding protein, so I'm flying blind.

The cows, raccoons, and hogs all found within the first 3 days

Forget that nonsense, mix a little shelled corn, and get a bag of Horse & Mule feed, i throw that out
about once a week just to keep the deer around place here, if they miss it, coons, and some birds will get
before the next day. Once hunting season comes around, horse/mule stuff mixed with reg shelled corn,
and our protein pellets! Then everyone is happy!

The local biologist told me that last years bag had some dried molasses in it, some corn kernals coated with
that is the attractant to deer. Different brands may differ.... all i know it works.

Good luck,

I took Hogflyer’s advice and got some Horse and Mule Sweet Feed. Put it out by the yard feeder yesterday, and deer were on it like a fat kid on a donut. I don’t dare put it in the hog trap, which has a covered top. I’m souring some corn for the hog trap. I’ll find something that big rascal can’t refuse.

I tried soured corn once. Nothing would touch it. Not even the pigs. I have found that often times trap shy pigs will go into a bigger trap with a bigger door.

Next up in the bait department would be corn and jello powder. After that, the powdered peanut butter. I’m a patient man.

I've had success with pure vanilla extract poured over corn.

Corn, topped by strawberry jello powder, was what finally worked. [Linked Image]

Smiling as I write this…I used the full sugar sweetened jello powder. The hog is…well…a hog, so diet jello wasn’t deemed necessary.

As I poured the powder over the corn, the swirling wind blew some my way. I licked my lips and the powder was very sweet.

That jello powder has a really strong sweet smell. A lot stronger than I expected.

Just for info, I was able to drag him from the trap. Using the non-official OGDT ( old guy drag test), I’d say he was 200# or slightly less. Per the OGDT, I can’t budge 250#.
