I’m thinking about getting a pup. It will be a pet and retriever for my son. His current Brittany may not last much longer. She seems to be going downhill quickly. I’ve never had a Cocker or hunted with one. Any information about the little dogs or a good kennel to get a pup from would be appreciated.

'Wife's uncle was buds with the Joshua Creek guy. He had English Cockers. I still remember the Thanksgiving prayer when we all stood in a circle and held hands. Max, the English Cocker, laid down in the middle of the circle, rolled on his back, and showed off his member. My father-in-law was saying the prayer. He didn't break a stride when everyone started giggling and said "and thank you Lord for Max."

Was Max worth a chit at finding dead bird?

Don’t have one. I’m on my second Brittany. I have hunted over several Field Cocker Spaniels and a couple of Boykins. Always paired with pointers. Great dogs and I would love to have one.

I have one.
She is a little older than two now...absolute ball of energy...all-day, will not stop...exceptional dead bird finder...good dove retriever as well.
Cons: As a puppy chewed, as can be expected, and peed all the time when she got excited...and she got excited over almost any attention at all. Pees when in trouble, not as much now, but all the time first 2 years... Will not leave my wife's pot plants alone, still an issue to this day.
Does not handle stern correction well at all...it took way longer then I anticipated to fix her fears after giving her a couple of swats on the rump and talking stern to her when she torn [censored] up as a young dog.
In hind site, I would put myself in check, have a more patience and avoid stern correction at all costs the first two years, no matter what she had destroyed...
To be clear she is not soft in the field, will crash heads first into thorn brush and cacti to retrieve/hunt dead...
I bought mine from a south Texas quail guide...can't find his contact info...
There is a guy in the Spring Branch/Bulverde area that allegedly has a fabulous bloodline and trains English Cocker...

Overall my cocker has great spirit in the field...but we are still working on harmony at home!

Ask for recent heartworm test when buying an adult dog from trainer/breeder mentioned above.

I think I gave you this already but I don't trust my memory. This is where Buster came from. Best dog I have ever owned. As a puppy he was a natural right out of the womb. https://www.facebook.com/comanchekennelsMalakoff, TX, United States, Texas (903) 922-3187 Emily.driskell@malakoffisd.org

So not a pup. You want one ready to work? If they are any good, they are higher than heck.

Maybe when I’m rich and famous I’ll be able to buy a dog trained by someone else, but I think training my own is worth the effort with a better result in half the time.

Most weigh between 25 and 30 lbs grown. I won't buy a started dog. I just like training them from pups, my way, for what I want. With a cocker that is bred right, all you have to do is take them hunting.

I have had some good pointers, at least one, I would call excellent. A labrador, that I thought the world of, but my favorite gun dog was my little English Cocker I called Millie. A born hunter, and fearless, she was an absolute ball of fire in the field, yet biddable. A snuggler in the house, but a birdshagger deluxe in the field. A total delight. Find a good breeder, tell them what you want in your cocker, and let the breeder pick. Good luck.
