Sorry if this is a dumb question. Currently we have a wheat field of approximately 20 acres. For hunting purposes, I want to enclose to half the size and let the remaining 3 sides of the field “grow up”.(surrounded by mesquites). I want to create a honey hole area that draws them in, but small enough to where I can potentially shoot them with my bow. We did not have it cut last year, but was just curious if by continuing to neglect it will the mesquite trees come in and take over? Or do I need to do something on my end? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Nope, just quit taking care of it and the Mesquites will take it over.

I would plant in indiangrass, it will provide cover until mesquites grow in.

I spend a lot of time killing Mesquite, and am having a brain cramp at the thought of anyone wanting Mesquite. Lay down till the feeling goes away.

Turn it into a food plot, clover maybe or soybeans, winter peas etc .... That would be the honey hole, not a field surrounded by mesquites. Multiple stands placed according to wind and go hunt.

Keep a good field! Put 1 or 2 corn feeders near you…game over.

Agree with this Another option would be to plant it in soy beans or something every spring and then plant in some tall screening grass to allow for a smaller plot in the winter.

You're going to want that whole field again one day. It'll cost to clean it up.

Takes a long time to grow a decent tree.

If you dont have cows on it, it will take along time to grow up. Cows speed up the process by alot.
Shredding also causes mesquite to grow like use less bushes, so try to limit the shredding in the years to come.
If you want to speed up the process collect ALOT of mesquite beans and acorns, soak them in water, and spread them around. You can also bring in cows from the pasture and rotate them in and out, just long enough to let them clean out thier system, which will spread seed quickly.
You can also run one long string of wire up and build a temporary fence, which will in courage native brush to grow along the new "fence line".

I'd consider establishing rows or a checkerboard pattern of a tall, native, perennial bunchgrass like switchgrass - Alamo variety. The deer will have cover and will feel a bit safe in there.
