Fellow THF Hog Hunters,
We have a hog trap on the place we hunt but haven't used it for years because we
caught a deer in it and it was quite the chore to get that young buck out of the trap
so we have never used it since then. We have been thinking of trying it again but normally
only have 2-3 days of hunting to try and catch one and we are not close so we cannot
check it. Therefore we would set the trap and then close the trap door when we left. There are several
attractants at the stores that are on sale but most of them say attractant for deer also. Is there an
attractant that hogs like that the deer don't care for that you guys can recommend? We don't have time
to make sour mash or something similar to that. thanks for your help.

Another hog carcass is about all I can think of that won't attract deer, but will (sometimes) attract hogs, but then you are trapping coyotes as well.

Deer will eat sour mash.

Let's face it, what you need is a cellular gate to prevent bycatch.

Depending upon your trap construction, this may help.

I have a standard 4 X 8 box trap which is roughly 40 inches high. After having caught a couple of deer and experiencing the same problems releasing them that you describe, I solved (so far, at least) the issue by placing a piece of fence wire across the entrance roughly 6-8 inches below the top of the trap. I put another piece inside the trap at the same height beyond the doors (I'm using saloon type doors on this trap).
Bucks will try to enter the trap, but their antlers hit the wire and they back out before getting in far enough to trigger the door release mechanism. Since installing the two wires across the trap near the top I've not caught another deer.

Obviously your mileage may vary, but it may be worth a try.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

One thing to think about. Hogs are pretty smart, if you close the door when you leave, then they know there is a door on it. We always wire the door fully open, so they can come and go at will, before we go back down to the lease again. That way you will catch them the first night you set and bait it!!

...assuming the hogs even come the first night. If hogs aren't already coming to the immediate area/spot, they may not pick up on the bait for days or weeks.

We wire the door open, bait it with a little corn, and leave it. They seem to come by daily to check it, for a while, even when emptied of corn. I don't think we have ever missed on a first night catch.

Put some of this around the door and a bit on the corn as well. Try not to lick your fingers as tempting as that may be. grin
