On an older model Ranger, when starting it, the key must be turned all the way to the right and pressure kept on it, or the engine dies when the key is released.

What is the best guess as to what the fix may be.

First place I would look is a new ignition switch. Jump the wires on the back to simulate key in the on position. It it stays running, you have a bad ignition switch.
