Six years ago, I found myself nursing a hangover after an Astros game (where we beat the Yankees in game 1 of the ALCS!) and decided it was time for a change. This decision sparked a journey towards sobriety that has not only transformed my body but also enhanced my mental clarity, making me a more present father, husband, and friend. As I celebrate this milestone, I recount my experiences with alcohol, the strategies that helped me manage cravings, and the importance of a robust support network. This episode is as much about my journey as it is about the power of community and reaching out for help. Through stories of listeners who've reached out, I illustrate that it's never too late to take the first step towards a better life. If you're dealing with alcohol or drug addiction, know that you're not alone. I share my thoughts, feelings, and personal testimony, to offer insights into my approach to sobriety, with the hope that it may provide some assistance and encouragement to anyone that may find themselves in similar situations with their own dependency issues. Congratulations George.
I recently did about the same thing. I enjoyed De Kuypers Apricot brandy. I realized that it was taking me a short time to go through a bottle. I decided to lighten up on it. Then I realized that I had gone a week without a drink. That has stretched into a couple of years and no desire for booze. I have a six pack of beer in the garage refrigerator that has also been there a long time. Again, not a conscious decision. My liquor cabinet is still full and will, I guess, stay that way.
Had a margarita at a Mexican restaurant recently. But only one and no desire for a second one.
Even better is quitting smoking cigarettes. I had quit and re started many times over a long life that started as a teenager. Then one day a couple of years ago I quit. Funny thing is that I never have, this time, had any cravings for one.
Now, if I could only figure out how to stop having my recently acquired arthritis.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP
