My neighbor’s son is a kid I really like. He tried tennis when I was teaching, but it just wasn’t his sport. He decided he’d play football, at 5’6” and 125 pounds. He made the team (3A) as a senior, but wasn’t getting to play much, and his self confidence was pretty low. He needed to believe in himself. But last week he did play, and made an important tackle on a big running back, and the coach saw it. And last night he played a good bit. I picked him up this morning after the team watched videos of next week’s team. He was feeling pretty happy. And then…and then, I had to go get some wood and t-posts at the local Woodson’s, and he went in with me. First guy we saw said to him “you’re number 22 aren’t you? Great game! I used to wear the same number and you wear it well”. And then I went to pay, and the tiny adorable high school girl at the cash register (tan, freckled, blond, dimpled, and cute) said hi to him and said he played a good game last night. I tell ya, that boy’s feet weren’t even touching the ground as we went to the truck. He’s not my kid, but is sort of an extra grandkid, and I was thrilled for him. I kidded him about that super cute girl, and he said “you’re never gonna let me forget that, are ya?” And I said “nope”. Probably a day he’ll never forget.
