Tomorrow is the first day of bow season here. I ran into a few last minute issues but I overcame that, and now it’s time. First day tomorrow. I am dialed in and ready to rock and roll!

Good luck Sir

Hope I see pics of you with a big one tomorrow, if not then at least sometime this season.

Figure with Shoulder surgery today I am out till mid November, but that would still leave me with 2.5 months of season with a gun for some meat

Man I thought I had them figured out. No pressure on the deer yet this year, I was the only hunter out there. Set up where I knew the does would move through around 8 or 9 am, picked me a good spot with plenty of cover and two shooting lanes through the brush. Also keeping the thermals in mind, perfectly facing the sunrise facing downhill. Thermals very light wind in my face as the sun rose. Not silhouetting myself at the top of the hill. Man I am going to lill something, I just know it!

Settled in before first legal light. About 10 minutes till 9 I heard her wheeze loud and run off wheez wheez wheez wheez dammit! Like right behind me. Directly downwind, i feel like she saw or heard me earlier and circled around to check my scent in the thermal. Are they really that smart? Good grief.

Keep at it. Look at the bright side, that deer that blew at you is probably closer than 90% of hunters ever get to a live deer.

Don’t give up. Things can change in an instant for the better.

Welp i shot a fawn. Looks like 4 cheek teeth 5th coming in? Two does came running in fast and i drew they frose, i let her rip. Grim reaper dropped her almost instantly. I dont feel great she is a fawn but i think i broke the curse. I think she will eat good.

Nothing wrong with shooting a young doe.

Congratulations on the kill!

Thank you. Make no mistake this is a very very young doe. A fawn. Like 6 months tops maybe as young as 4 months? Barely lost her spots, still had a few on one of her hams facing me and on the opposite side, a few spots on her shoulder and ham. So i don’t know. Based on cheek teeth maybe 6 months based on her molting maybe 4 months. Very young doe. I did not see the spots on her ham when I let it fly, the sumacs were thick i coukd only see the front half. Man it was fast and furious and exciting i am not gonna lie.

You know I have talked a lot of smack that i would not hesitate to shoot a yearling for meat but I can’t say I am proud of this one. It is bittersweet, first archery deer but dang.

Don’t worry about it. It’s a doe and will eat better than anything else you could have shot. Ill should a doe fawn on a place that has too many does. It’s not a sin or anything.

You shouldn’t have any guilt over it

No shame in that. Congratulations on a bow kill. None are easy and all are trophies!

I think may times it is harder to get an old doe than an old buck. I have taken several old does during rifle season that continually busted me in archery season.

Man it feels good to get some venison in the freezer. Any venison. Fired up the old freezer in the garage and justified keeping it with this little doe. Up to this point all i have kept in there is a single baggy of cut bait. Welp tossed that haha!

It’s probably more like veal. I have never eaten a little doe like this I can’t wait!

Wife is out back again this morning, she saw a doe late yesterday afternoon, but only velvet bucks are legal right now. One raccoon got busted in the head with the discharge bolt though right at dark, so good hunt for her. That heavier bolt with bullet point and flat area still at 250+fps fractured the corn thief skull banana
