Hey.
Not sure if I post in right section. I traded an AR for a Remington 1100 12 ga with full choke barrel. Unbeknownst to me and lack of research, I came up on post that you should not shoot steel shot through full choke barrel. So I spent all day searching this and found a few posts on using Bismuth shots or cooper plate lead shots. Then there folks that said to buy a newer steel barrel which is no where to be found. At least not online. So…
Anyone uses the Bismuth shots or copper plated lead in older shotgun barrel and is the copper plated legal? Or any insight on this.
I think I’m probably going to buy new shotgun when it’s closer to season open. Just like to use this first.
Thanks, Eugene

The 1100 is still made, it would be cheaper in the long run to just buy a replacement barrel, be sure you stick with the chamber length of the shotgun you have with the new barrel.

Bismuth would be fine in it. Any type of lead would. I shoot small size steel shot out of my full choke guns all the time. No issues whatsoever with barrel bulge. By small I mean noylthing larger than #2.

No kind of lead is legal for waterfowl, except for Sandhill cranes.

I’ve entered a notify me on the online shops and will probably go to couple local shop to see availability. No kind of lead is legal for waterfowl, except for Sandhill cranes. I didn’t think an type lead shot is legal. Eugene

Check out this link to the Remington Repair Center. Good prices and may have a RemChoke barrel for the 1100. https://gunrepaircenter.com/If you call, the manager Drew should be able to tell you if he has anything available.

I am not 100%, but I think you can send that barrel to Briley and have them thread it for a choke. I wouldn't do that to an heirloom or expensive gun, but in your case it may make the gun more usable year round.

Just buy bismuth if you are worried about steel. Bismuth is a lot better than steel. Might be worth looking at if a new barrel is too much.

Any decent gunsmith should be able to open up the berrel to a Mod. or IC and shouldn't be very expensive.

Yes I did. It’s a remchoke barrel. I tried to call this morning and no one answered. I’ll try again tomorrow.
The description on that barrel is a trap and picture of the barrel stamped target contour. I went and looked that up and found info on a target contour barrel. The gas port is bigger to be reliable with target shots. IE: 1oz-7/8 oz loads. someone mention he used 1 1/8oz load without problem. Most #4 shots are 1 1/4oz and up. Even 2 3/4” shells. So I would be able to shoot steel but only #7/8 shot?. Now I don’t reload so I have no idea on the difference makes except to try them. Too me this seems to be wonderful learning experience but Bismuth shot is my best option. Yeah…

Eugene, there are 2 Remington 1100 12 ga 30” barrels on their website. The one i posted is not the trap barrel. I can’t tell from the picture if it has a Rem Choke. I recently purchased an 1187 barrel from them and had them Cerakote it in Mossy Oak Green leaf. It won’t be easy to find a better price on a new Remington barrel. It may take a phone call or two to talk to Drew but it’s worth it. https://gunrepaircenter.com/1100-12-30-vt-gloss-bbl/

Thank you all for advice. JimB, that barrel you found is a RemChoke barrel and I bought it with a few other parts. Really great parts source. The nice fella said they have another for anyone that wants one. I also bought a few boxes of bismuth to try.

Unique Guns in Waco has always had several 1100 barrells in stock. I think i've bought 3 or 4 in the last several years, including a mod for a 20gaLW for $150! The others were for 12ga

Sent it to Mike Orlen 413-256-1630, quick turn around. Cheaper and better than a new barrel. Have it threaded and use truelock tubes. I have several buddy’s that have used him.
