I have coyotes on the place and want to reduce their numbers. I have not been successful, and the wife is on my case about it. She Ioves the fawns. Apparently I stink at calling them, mouth or machine. What caller is going to improve my chances?
I kill ‘em during hunting season, but need to take out some during the hot weather - hunting in the mornings.
Probably I need some schooling on this.

This is a tough time to call. It’s hot, they want to expend as little energy as possible. You’re going to have to really entice them, or go sit by water, but that’s going to take a while.
This time of year I’m strictly hunting them at night with the thermal. Mouth call as usual. If you hear them howling, they won’t respond to anything you serenade them with, so it’s best not to educate them .

My whole life I've been told if you hear them you won't see them, they won't respond to calls and its held true. I hear them howling all around and when I play the caller I get fox and coons.

First let’s ask a question. So the coyotes y’all have called didn’t ever howl or weren’t vocal ?? For how long… maybe if you would have been there 5 minutes earlier you would have heard them howling and if that happened they wouldn’t come to the call because you heard them? Point really being it depends. If they were just howling because they are in the mood to howl why can’t they be called? Now on the other hand if they heard or smelled something that bothered them ( like you driving or moving into their area) and they challenge howl or as I call it bugger bark then yea you just made it a lot harder. With that being said I hunt coyotes for fun and enjoyment of being out there and when it’s 105 in the shade it just ain’t!!!

Back before I started calling coyotes poorly, I mostly saw them while hunting deer or pigs. Quite a few times I heard them howling intermittently and could tell they were moving in my direction, as the sound grew closer. Other times they’d just show up, never having made a sound. Might be good that I didn’t try to call them. But, in my defense, I have managed to call up coyotes over the years, and foxes and bobcats. I’m just not the fellow that people point to as the master caller.
I’ll have a go in the morning, using some tips from a known successful coyote hunter. Might take the 220 Swift out this time, which will give me a reason to shoot it a bit today to check the sights.

Not what you asked, but:
Texas A&M Agrilife Extension 2870 North Harvey Parkway Suite 100 Bryan 77807 979-599-5070
Call them and they will set you up with a Govt. Trapper to get rid of your problem.

I hadn’t even considered that option, since I had no idea it was an option. Thanks.

Trapper's stuff is working 24 hours a day for you.
You are welcome, they remove bob cats and beavers as well.

I've experienced it numerous times after sitting in the stand all day, hear them howl, try and call and nothing. Yet on those nights where I never hear them, give a few quick yips or a rabbit whaling, and here they come. Rarely have I ever heard one do anything more than a yip when they are coming to a call, stealth is key for their survival. I know my lease and I can hear coyotes no matter where they are, so I know the nights they are howling and the nights they are not. Now I'm not saying that an hour later they won't come to a call, but when they are howling, they are going to stay stationary for the time being.

A coyote that is howling is not a coyote that is hunting. If they hear or see you drive into their area and warning bark, might as well move on. Adios, gary
