I bought my wife a 2020 expedition as I was told the cam phaser issue was resolved on the 2020+ models.
I guess we will see.

Here is the link to the TSB with build dates of effected vehicles.

Thanks! I need to check my build dates.

One road trip and so much drama.

The ice chest does not hold ice and now truck uncertainties.

What a life, and where is Bill?

Turkeyhunter asked for specifics on the Tundra electronics problem. It isn’t really a problem, in that the electronics work, but that they cause unexpected issues that weren’t issues with the previous generation Tundras. More of irritating issues than real problems. Safety related things that didn’t exist on the previous generation. I’d think that after some time they’d get used to the new quirks that are intended to prevent supposedly unsafe actions like backing up the truck with the door open. One nephew said loudly “I hate this truck”. Well, I love my old 2007 Tundra, so hearing hate about a new one concerns me.

One nephew drives his Tundra to work and back, so it never even gets dirty. The other one uses his as a serious work truck. You’d have to wash it to be sure what color it is.

My wanting a new truck is sorta like that Maternity Clock that women talk about. Sometimes the urge is strong, but if I lay down, the feeling passes.

Unfortunately all of the new vehicles have nanny features like not being able to back up with the door open - or even pull forward with it open. I think there are ways around it. Just the world we live in.

Everybody I know with the Ecoburst engines has had their truck at the dealer getting engine work more than they’ve driven them

Yep, I'm almost ready to sell my Raptor and be done with Ford all together. I know all the car companies are the same, but they really pissed me off yesterday.

'17-'20 HO EcoBoost engines have a problem with the Cam Phasers. There is no oil in the top of the engine when you start it up so you get this crazy rattle and metal on metal sound when you cold start. I got this fixed under warranty in July of 2021, everything was great until about 2 weeks ago and it started doing it again out of no where. So called my dealer service department and my normal service guy wasn't there, but wanted to get my truck in queue so I talked to some random guy. He looked up my account and saw that it was changed just under 2 years ago and said not to worry all of our work carries a 2 year parts/labor warranty so just bring the truck up after the 4th holiday and we'll just need to hear it to confirm. So I made an appointment for 7:30 yesterday morning.

My wife told me to take a video of it cold starting it in our driveway just in case they try to say they can't hear it, smart wife. I get there around 7:10ish so I can kill the truck and let it cool down so its a simi cold start, they opened up at 7:30 and my normal guy still wasn't there so some lady service writer waited on me. She wasn't very friendly, maybe because it was so early confused2, explained what the guy had told me about bringing my truck in to hear the noise. She says sir, I'm going to have to have a tech take it back and diagnosis the problem. I told her, I know exactly what the problem is the tech can come up here and just start the truck no need to take it back. She insisted that was not the case. I thought this was going to be a 10-15 minute venture and I'd still be able to make it to work by 8am. Boy was I wrong. I was sitting in the waiting area and my wife called so I went outside to talk to her. I'm sitting on a bench directly in front of my truck. Tech comes out gets in my truck messed with both mirrors and my seat, then rolls down the window and starts the truck. I hear the noise plain as day, he then backed it out and proceeded to take it into the bay.

I sit inside for another 20ish minutes or so and the lady comes back and says the tech says he didn't hear anything when starting up the truck. I looked at her and said are you kidding me? I was sitting right in front of my truck when he started it up and heard it plain as day. I said good thing I took this video this morning. She cut me off and said follow me walked me out to where the tech was and he was just standing next to my truck playing on his phone doing nothing. Showed him the video and he said oh yea that's definitely the Cam Phasers........ Ya think!.

So she walks me back inside and said he is writing up a ticket. Wait another 20 or so minutes at this time it is already 8:45ish so I walked up to the desk and asked her if she had an ETA oh when I could get my truck back I really needed to get into work. She said he is finishing up and will be pulling it around momentarily. Another 10-15 minutes go by, finally he pulls the truck around and she called me over to the desk. I told her the previous guy I had talked to said that this would be covered under the 2 year parts/labor warranty. She said no problem I just need to find the previous ticket in the system to make sure it was under the 2 years after finding it she said sorry we won't pay for this repair because it was paid for under warranty. I said what? That makes absolutely no sense why does it matter whether I paid for it out of pocket or Ford paid for it under warranty. The maintenance was still required and is no longer working. She gave me the run around and at this point I was seeing red and just wanted to get the hell out of there and get into work as I was already about 1h 30m late. I finally just ask how much will the repair be, she says i don't know he still hasn't finished writing up the ticket and then it needs to go to parts. bang. She said she would email it over when it comes through.

Grabbed my keys and walked out.

Called my buddy that is a service manager at a local Chevy dealership to ask him about the whole no parts/labor warranty if the dealer warranty covered the initial repair. He said yep that's exact same way we are. I said why? That is stupid. He said I don't know it comes directly from Chevy, probably same as Ford. Still doesn't make sense to me, regardless if I paid for it out of pocket or if Ford paid for it, the repair obviously didn't work and needs to be redone.

Around 11am I get an email with the quote $2321 OTD for a problem that Ford created and now refuses to fix. There was a service bulletin on this issue and Ford fixed them, but the mine had already been fixed under warranty and the cut off for the SB was Jan 1 of 2023 so out of luck on that. I had completely forgotten I bought an extended warranty when I bought the truck. So sent that over to them and she called me back telling me the it will all be covered under the warranty but valve cover gasket are on back order with no ETA and has been on order since first of June. Oh and there are 4-5 other vehicles in line before to get exact same thing done.

Tell me this isn't a EcoBoost problem when tiny Bob Utter Ford in Sherman TX has 4-5 vehicles in front of mine needing exact same thing and it effecting all HO EcoBoost engines in both Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

My wife bought an 18 expedition they did the recall on the cam phasers before she picked it up. I wish I knew more about that before she bought it. Makes me want to sell now.

As to the subject at hand. The current Ford 5.0 or GM 5.3 are both great motors. The possibility of a lemon from either is there but statistically you buy either of those trucks use them normally and maintain properly you’ll be happy.

If the Ecoboost is such a terrible engine then why is Ford on their 14th year of putting it into vehicles? I've had 6 different Lariat F150s over the last 10 years (company trucks) in both 5.0 and 3.5, I prefer the Ecoboost over the 5.0. Nothing wrong with either of them.

Good the posts are really telling the “real” gas mileage; not some blown up numbers higher than mileage listed by the car manufacturer. 8 or 9 pulling is real.

For the same reason Chrysler has repeatedly been the most unreliable vehicle manufacturer but they keep making them for 1 reason…people keep buying them

To fishdfly, thanks to you guys I was able to overcome the ice melt in the Igloo cooler. And now I’ve learned that some of the Tundra “safety” things can be turned off. Probably will need to be turned off every time you start it up, but at least you can turn them off.

Man, I hope that’s all the drama I have to deal with, cause I didn’t even consider it drama. If drama is desired, I can regale you guys with why sibling 2 is pissed at sibling 3, and the latest on sibling 4 (nudist), or sibling 5’s number 2 kid (guy) that moved to Miami and married a Cuban guy, or maybe sibling 5’s ex husband that is truly as crazy as a Betsy Bug. It was good to see them all, but it sure made me happy to live in Texas and 400 miles from them.

I didn’t even mention sibling 3’s loudmouth liberal anti-Tumper plus size ++ daughter. An hour with her and she never shut up. I’d love to stake her over an anthill.

Yep, good to be home. Does anyone here truly have a life with no drama or at least perceived drama?

My life is 99% drama free. Took a lot of work to get it there…but I’ve also told my own siblings to get F’d because of their drama. Funny enough, when I told my older sister her sh1t attitude is the reason her life is sh1t (plus some other “get over it” talk) she came back a couple years later thanking me because nobody had ever told her that to her face. Told a brother the same and haven’t heard from him since. 7 ish years ago now. Wife’s uncle really pissed me off a couple years back so I called the father in law and told him I’d whoop his brothers [censored] if I see him again (that’s a whole long story). Father in law and I bonded over that and have had zero reasons for talking to her uncle.

No more V8s in Rams after 2023 - going to 3.0 twin turbo Hurricane next year. We looked at a Wagoneer with one - impressive power - sounds like a Toyota Camry - hard pass.

Sounds like DukeCigars got rid of the family drama by getting rid of most of the family. Some of my family is a bit flawed and they might think the same of me (how could they…), but I don’t want to stop seeing them every now and then. And the reason that I’m happy being 400 miles from them is that if I lived closer and had a bit too much whiskey, I might tell the ones (the younger crowd) that I don’t like what I really think. That would not go over well with the ones I do like.

You may be right on 2023 being last Ram V8. However, I bet I've read a half dozen articles in the last year saying two different things, like 2024 being last. I know I like my 2021 well enough that I might buy the last one, whichever that year may be, when it is finally decided.

I’ve got no pictures, and he and she aren’t really much to look at anyway at this point in their lives. And Ol Thumper might not have his Valium close at hand.

All in all, it was a good trip. And my sister had Blanton’s.

I am like you. I love my O7 too. Still runs smooth and pulls great. I dont need a new one just want one. My wife has a new Rav4 and the electronics are overwhelming. Some of it can be turned off and some can be ignored but some of it is interesting. Wish it had a real key instead of a fob. As far as a new Tundra I am thinking more along the lines of a low mileage older model. I prefer the 5.7 V8 over the new 6 and I dont like the new looks.
