The folks we visited in Michigan last September are coming down to Texas in June, and we’ll pick them up in Austin at the airport and head for San Antonio. It has probably been 10 years since we were there, and we are way out of date on good local places to eat on the river walk or nearby. Any suggestions for where to take Michigan Yankees would be appreciated. Probably don’t need a steak place, but will need an excellent Mexican food place and probably a good burger and a chicken fried place. And a bar with decent live music.

Will, for sure, visit the Alamo. And maybe the snake farm on I-35. And maybe a cavern on the way back.

These folks are very conservative, like beer, and like deer hunting. Good people.

At the Mercado plaza close to downtown, Margaritas is hard to beat for Mexican food, namely fajitas and of course, margaritas...Get there around 5:00/5:30 and expect a hour or so wait...

Casa Rio on the Riverwalk has been a staple for decades; expect a hour wait there too.

I have not been there personally, but everybody recommends Chris Madrid's for burgers.

Yep. When I have to go S.A., that is one of my go to's. The Parillada there with a marg or two and oh my. Th big bonus is those Michiganders will apprecaite to setting there at the market. Consider taking them to the Briscoe Western Art Museaum afterwards. It's right around the corner and don't take too long to go through, but it is all Texas.

There is an interesting old church named the Aamo down there also.

Blanco Cafe for good mexican.

J Prime for a good steak.

Eddy V's for good seafood.

Richters Antler Cafe up in Bulverde for the best chickenfried steak.

Look up Spechts store for live music and drinks.

Tejas Rodeo has live music too.

The service last time at Eddy V's sucked big time. We won't be back.

I know Casa Rio has a historic following...but no locals eat there...ever. And, FYI, down on the river, below street level, out of any breeze, starting in June gets flame

The Liberty Bar, now down in King William, is good food with a full, good bar. Beethoven Hall, right around the corner, has good German beer. Pretty historic too. Lots of the leading German businessmen were members back in the day, when San Antonio was being built up.

It has been awhile since we did Casa Rio, maybe 10 years or so ago but the place was slammed packed and food was certainly good, not great. They do have indoor and outdoor seating. As far as River Walk Mexican food, it's maybe the best option there.

La Fonda on Main is excellent, upscale though. Very old building, expertly restored, etc. 09er set lunches there regularly. NOT a cheap, but good, hole-in-the-wall.

If you want authentic, you gotta go out to West Avenue and I10 (NOT on the tourist circuit) to Taqueria El Burrito Tapatio. Speaking Spanish helps with the order. I stumble miserably, but have never left hungry. It's the area my parents and my wife's parents would live and shop. It's "Little Mexico" now. Excellent Thrift stores around there! grin

We are here on the River Walk. Drank a bunch of wine before we went looking for food. Took a boat ride. The Michiganders are happy. Alamo tomorrow, then the Museum that has the bar. Bloody Mary for me. For lunch, probably go to the market for Mexican.

Had lunch in Gruene at the Gristmill. They liked that. They passed on the Snake Farm in San Marcos.

Don’t know where to do breakfast tomorrow. Could use some guidance from ya’ll.

Snake Farm is on the south end of New Braunfels, not San Marcos.

Schilo's opens at 8am. On the street, close to Casa Rio. Very old German delicatessen. Selection of beer too.

Had breakfast at Schilo’s this morning. Excellent. Had supper last night at Landry’s. Not excellent. Will never darken their door again.

Water Street Oyster Bar originally out of Corpus would have been much better than Landry's.

That’s a bummer, wife and I had a good meal there a couple weeks ago. I didn’t know Water Street had a location in SA , thanks.

Went to the CC location several years ago, it was good. Oysters Rockefeller were fantastic!
