Whats your theory on missing sow?

My guess is that she's around pretty close. Just catch one of those little rascals and I bet she's in your hip pocket in short order.
Adios,
Gary

Adios,

You would think they're easy to catch, but they're as fast as a cottontail and bury themselves dead center of the stickiest thorn bushes when I finally ran them down tired. I say you're right, I've seen sows leave a few behind that can't keep up when momma runs off during danger.

They’ll get picked off by coyotes if they’re abandoned or momma is dead.
I had a group of 7 running around together this past deer season. They travelled together for a couple of days but their numbers quickly dwindled til all were gone.

Momma not killed by a hunter, 100% on that. I doubt they made it through the 1st night. Nature is a cruel bit--. Crazy thing, I was walking back to my Ranger, and right as I was about to get in, I see them coming down the dirt path right to me. They came close, real close. It was only when I made a move to reach for one that they took off. I suspect they've followed close behind a Ranger as the ranch hand threw some feed out while gathering and learned that behavior. Could be that a coyote or cat got after the group, things got western and they couldn't keep up. Could be a lot of things.

Those are small enough a raptor could pick them off, too. Circle of life.

I'd like to catch one, put it in a cage and shoot coyotes that come around. Surely I'm not the first to think of that.

I have two hunting partners that have done it multiple times. In both of those cases sow was tits up, little ones hanging around. One was put brought to camp, hung out in the cabin a while before being released.

I had one last year about twice the size of those that showed up orphaned and it fell in with the cows. Stayed with the herd for 2 or 3 months before it finally went missing. You couldn't lay hands on it but you could walk up to within a few feet of it.

I'm not saying saying you can't do it, I'm interested in the spectacle of the act.

Those already dead by now and moms toast somewhere but we’ve caught several of them over the years that size after the mom had been shot. Their pretty cute up close but mean as the devil and will bite anything that gets close to it.

You would think our mountain lion numbers would be going through the roof with all the feral hogs out there,..Just a thought. I put my pig carcasses in a pit and usually kill coyotes crossing the wheat field headed that way a day or two later.

I had15 piglets that size hiding under an agarita thicket not far from the feeder I was watching one morning. I waited two hours for the sow to return, I was going to shoot her and let the coyotes have the little ones. Kind of a 16 for 1. She never showed so I walked down and shot two of piglets from about six feet. The rest ran squealing into the woods. I didn't think a sow would leave little ones that long.
