Tis the season, I have been working them at my house too. I have enough every year that I bought me some snake tongs. Very effective at holding them while I do the Lords work with my machete!

153k for a snake bite?!?! Wow, and that was 2015. That'd probably be $250k in 2023.

True, but does every patient actually need it (for a copperhead bite). Maybe....maybe not. Bite severity and reaction varies widely.....I understand that.

Nephew was bitten on the foot.....required no hospital treatment. Coworker (15 yrs. ago) bitten on fleshy part of thumb/palm)....swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks but no anti-venom administered or required.

$83,xxx from pharmacy for a snake bite? That’s gouging in a big way.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Dog was bit when I was a kid, vet said give it Benadryl. Worked out just fine. For $153k (at 2015 prices) I'd might be willing to risk it. I don't know if I'm worth that much.

^^^^^^

I know I'm not.

Wife would take one look at that and quickly deduce:

1. Husband is old (68)....how much longer was he going to live anyway?

2. $153K would remodel the kitchen and master bath and still have money left over for a funeral.

3. Even if he doesn't die.....as soon as he couldn't get the lids off of jars anymore, I was going to get rid of him anyway.

If your job was to grab a pissed off rattlesnake by the neck and collect his venom, how much would you charge? I'd be wanting a pretty penny for that line of work!

I still wonder (concerning COPPERHEAD bites) if there isn't too much a rush to treat with antivenom.

I fully understand a bite CAN present serious complications in some victims. But typically, if you don't have an anaphylactic reaction many bites will resolve on their own.

In my area of Texas (Deep East Texas) copperheads are responsible for the most venomous bites by a large margin. This study (done in East Texas) concerning copperhead bites and NO antivenom treatment is interesting.

Brings up a good point about the way we do things here in the US. With medical insurance and the unknown third party payor paying the bills, it does make you wonder how many would pay if it was all put of pocket.

I also know if there was no medical insurance and the distance of a third party payor, this stuff would not cost this much.

In medicine there is zero correlation whatsoever between the service provided and the bill they hand you. They're kind of like roofers or air conditioning salesman who hope you just bite and agree to pay it. My wife's grandmother got bit by a copperhead out in Quinlan a few years ago and they didn't stick her with a bill that's even 5% of the one posted here.

I don't see what the big deal is anyway, working outside around water I find venomous snakes on a very regular basis and all I do is relocate them. Snakes are aggressive because they are pretty low on the food chain and they think you're going to eat them.

Trolling? Heck no, I meant every word of it.
