What 20 ga. ammo would you recommend for teal season? I will be shooting an O/U and can shoot magnums. What size shot? How much shot, and what brand? The shots won't be too lengthy and we're only talking 2 boxes, so I'm willing to pay up. Thank you.

Leave the 20 ga. at home, shoot a 12 ga. and be done with it. Better chance of killing your duck than wounding.

For teal I'd shoot anything you got from #3 to #5 shot, 2 3/4" or 3". I've seen some GWT shot during big duck season with #2 and it caused too much damage. I've shot a few with #7 steel upland loads during a dove/teal combo hunt and had a couple cripples that weren't easy to recover.
I bought some Kent Teal Steel 3" #5 a while back and it does work well, but it's overkill IMO if you already have other ammo you can use.

A 20 gauge is great on teal. Short range shots with a 20 gauge on teal need nothing more than #6 or #7 IMO.

#6 dove loads.
Everyone I know that uses BOSS swears by them.
I use #6 steel with modified chokes and usually don't shoot more than 3 or 4 times a hunt as the BW stay so wadded up I have had several 2 and 3 in one shots.

1 ounce of steel 4 shot around 1,400 fps is what I like. The cheap Winchester expert or Rio work just fine.

It’s just a teal, not a turkey. Before all the steel BS I would use 20g dove loads and do just fine.

I also shoot an o/u 20 on teal. I don't overthink the ammo. Whatever is left over from last year -3's , as I hunt timber in big duck season with an o/u too and will use it then.

Don’t over think it. You can kill teal with almost any load. Anything larger than #4s are really overkill. Most of our bluewing shots are over the spinners at 20-25 yards max. Open the chokes up a notch or two to increase your pattern at close teal ranges.
I am actually considering buying a 28 gauge since we shoot such a high percentage of teal each season. I think it would be more fun. Between bluewings and greenwings we are well over 80% teal in our Louisiana Pecan Island marsh.
Just my 2 cents. Big Hutch

Buy the cheapest # 4,5 or 6's you can get. As far as the Boss comments, I guess maybe if your taking longer shots but I bought a case of Boss for last year and I will NEVER buy Boss again. I thought I shot poorer with them but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt....that said they dam sure didn't do any better than the blue box cheap federals either. But I take close range shots and the expensive or more expensive rounds are not needed for that.
ITS 100% proven fact....if your taking close, " in range" shots the cheapest ammo you can buy is as good as anything else you can buy.

Shoot stock benelli IC and Creamator MOD either Boss 20ga 3/5 of heavy shot 7/8 4s or 6s. Nothing more devastating than HS. You can find them time to time for 500 a flat, which is great deal. 700-800 flat no need- they do show up. Had some 1.25 6s in 20GA and same round in 12GA.
Haven’t pulled out 12Ga since 2019
