Had an issue with a door handle on a blind. Had the door tied down with a bungie chord. That there norther that came down was pretty aggressive and I was fearful the door had come open. Watched the radar Thursday night and didn't see any rain at the lease. Watched it again Friday and then Saturday. Amygirl's family left mid-day, told Wifeypoo my issue and we took the two hour sojourn from Rio Frio to Fowlerton. Misted the whole way. Turned off 97 on to the ranch road and noticed it was wetter than the mist could've provided, but heck I thought I was imagining things.

Got to camp, saw evidence of the wind and knew I was on the right track. Went out the two and half miles of new oilfield road and noticed they were already taking the rig down. That's when the "fun" began". Saw where the rig workers had chopped up some of the ranch road past the new road and wasn't happy. Put it in four wheel drive high and the "journey" began. it became obvious pretty quick that there mist must've been pretty heavy. Slip sliding away should've been the CD in the player. Wifeypoo asked if I had a wench and she didn't like the answer. I was committed.

Took the back road to the pen, found one small shed and grew about 2 inches with the mud sticking to my boots. Got up in the blind, the door was still closed tight and then want about replacing the door knob. Got it done, wanted to visit the other pens, but knew I shouldn't. Somehow made it back to the oil field road. Few times have I felt better.

Got back to the front gate, asked the attendant if there had been a rain I missed and was told the front gat gauge recorded two inches of rain and there was hail. Also was advised it was heavier back in the pasture near the gas rig which was being dismantled. It's been awhile since we got rain in March. Not sure if it could've come at a better time. Feeling so fortunate.

Is Rio Frio just south of Leakey,? If so that is a beautiful area with a lot of exotics running around.

That country is going to pop!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Yep. As the "crow flies", we are just about a mile and a quarter north of the main entrance to Garner State Park.

I remember one year in March it rained enough through there that the roads were closed due to water on them in March. I was headed to Brackettville and went from Kerrville back around by San Antonio to get there to guide on TYHP turkey hunt. First part of the hunt was called due to Thunderstorms. That was i think 2016 or 2017.

Are you a native of the Rio Frio area? I grew up in Utopia. My Dad's family was from the Rio Frio/Leakey area. Back in the day, Rio Frio had an elementary school. Both of my parents taught there for a couple of years. All the people in the Rio Frio cemetery named Burns are my ancestors.

yeah, but after a rain and when walking, you gain 2-3 inches in height in less than 100 yards Then it takes a power washer to get it off your boots.

I made the first 26 years of my life in a 2wd. I’m amazed at what a 4x4 will do but I worry about the day I find out what it won’t do…

Getting back to where no one can get you out plain and simple sucks. I still remember the Taco having to drag back the Ranger 3 miles to camp. Dang sticky mud and some solid determination got him a burned out belt.

We didn't get the March rain ya'll got in LaSalle and it was getting awful dry when I was at the ranch in Webb a couple weeks ago. I just checked the weathernet site and it shows about 3.1" there now, dang I hope that's what's really in the rain gauge!!

I’ve spent most of my 80 years with a 4WD. Been stuck plenty of times and glad I have a tractor. My present truck is a 2WD Tundra that, in 10 years, has never been stuck.

4WD mentality will get you stuck. Well, there’s also “Hold my beer and watch this.”

This Spring has been welcome. Have not had any torrential road damaging storms, yet nice showers spread out over time. Seldom has the pasture looked this good and when so consequential to antler development. Don't think we can find any way to complain about the conditions this year.

This boy looks healthy as do many others.

Yeah Hud, thats a big boy for sure. Looks good. About another month and we will be looking at splits in the G1 to G2 area and then the excitement starts.

Deer are about to pop on my place. Saw several yesterday that looked ripe and ready to pop twins. Couple others that looked to be singleton preggos. Lots of young bucks, but I know there are some older ones out there. They are loving the browse right now. Gotta keep the rain coming thru august, and then we can talk about antler growth.

Reality is, it takes a few years of wet to make a marked improvement on the herd, but individuals will always find a way to surprise us.
