Who will be planting late Spring/Summer plots for deer?
What will you be planting?

I have tried a few times but the lack of rain has prevented much success. We did a few acres of peas (don't recall which kind) a few years back and one they got up about knee high, the deer wiped them out in just a few days. It was really weird, like they had no interest whatsoever, then bam.

I planted a mixture of seed in my pen...around 100x60 ft.. Not very big but just for grins...the beans were just like you had ...they grew up then over night they were all gone...some sorghum...did work a little..then I used corn..this worked great. As the corn began to come up the deer let them get to a foot tall then they started to munch on the leaves. They lasted until early winter as stalks. The deer liked to just chew on the leaves. So you might plant some corn and see how that works as it will last through the summer into the fall as stalks. Not very expensive as I used feed corn only not seed corn ...I did however, fertilize the pen. It was just for grins but worked enough to convince me to try to plant corn in the future. But I just stayed with feeding shell corn in my feeders and hand feed also in the pen.

I gave up, at least for this year. Just too busy, and then there's the same old result.... When we get enough rain for the spring plots to grow well, the deer don't really need them because everything else is growing well too. When it's dry enough the deer really need them, it's too dry for them to grow well. So we're just feeding protein this year until fall plots go in.
