Austin or Austin area? Stiles Switch as mentioned above is really good. I do to the one in Cedar Park from time to time. I try not to go to Austin because of all the hippies and homeless people so I don't know what else is there. If Austin area is good, Louie Mueller in Taylor is the place. Get a beef rib.

I have friends that rave about Valentina's TexMex but I've never tried it. One of these days ...

Stiles Switch would be my choice in Austin (I usually go to their Cedar Park location).

Louie Mueller in Taylor is the trademark BBQ where a lot of the other Austin BBQ joints pit masters learned and perfected their trade (Franklin, Stiles Switch, LA BBQ, etc all came out of Taylor.)

Distant Relatives BBQ, very unique in that he uses West African spices. I've eaten at a lot of top tier BBQ places and the ribs blew me away.

Man, some people raved about Dickies when they opened one near my old house, so I gave it a shot. It was probably the worst BBQ I have ever had. It made Bill Miller seem top tier. But they are still around so some people must like it.

Dickies is the McDonald's of BBQ. It's edible, and there's tons of locations.

That's a real insult to McDonalds francisees.

This was true 15 years ago but not today. Lockhart is now for Nostalgia, though Terry Blacks and Barbs B Q has brought modern bbq to Lockhart.

Franklin's really does live up to all the hype. I've been to a decent # of the TM Top 50 and it really is the best brisket IMO. La Barbecue, Leroy and Lewis, and Mickelthwait's were also top notch when I went. InterStellar BBQ is next on my list in Austin.

I was pretty disappointed with Loro, especially since they were out of just about everything at the beginning of a dinner shift.

I think what he's saying is that Lockhart is Old School, not that there's anything wrong with that. They haven't evolved with the new trends, especially on the side dishes, which often lack effort or creativity. FWIW, Daniel Vaughn, the BBQ Snob, did not include a single Lockhart establishment in his last Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Rankings.

Okay, I can understand that. I get it about the sides. Some of the best Q I've had in my life, the sides sucked big-time.

IT was meant to be. McDonalds sucks, and I can think of 100 other places that I would rather eat a burger. Dickies is the same. They suck too. I guess I really don't know where to get good BBQ anymore. I don't eat BBQ from anywhere but my backyard or from the smoker down at the ranch.

I thought Franklin's meats were all good, but none were the best I've had. Those beans though....outstanding.

Yep, that is why some of the older guys are getting left behind. The newer ones are focusing on better and more unique side options.

Ha just a simple typo and "He went to Tech" is a compliment!

Gringo Bling is spot on with the nostalgia reference.

Concentrating on side dishes - how charming or otherwise phooey. Nothing like ordering by the open fire and getting crackers, onions, an avocado and pickles to go with your hots, chop & clod.

If you are going out in Austin, you have to check out Dai Due
It is hands down, one of the best meals I've had.

The owner is Jesse Griffiths, who also is a THF member. He's also the author of the cookbooks, Afield and The Hog Book.

I highly suggest you all go check out his place if you are going to be in Austin.
