Hunted 2022 Thanksgiving week in Quanah (Hardeman County) last year and had a great time. Bucks seemed to be getting towards the locked down stage and were hard to come by, but the outfitter said that things seemed to be happening a week earlier than normal. Wasn’t successful but still had fun. Long story short my wife and I rebooked for that same week this year. Now… a friend I made in liars years hunt booked the week before Christmas and just had two folks drop in him. He is saying that the hunting is better then than it is during thanksgiving.

Make the change or stick with the week we already have?

Stick with what you have. I hunt that same area and the weekend before through the week after thanksgiving is always prime time.

I know where I hunt around Lake Meredith the time around Thanksgiving is usually pretty good. So if I had something arranged I'd sit tight.

Just checked my notes. Shot this one on 11-20, chasing a doe [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Then on 11-22 saw a buck mount a doe, and on 12-3 my hunting partner also witnessed a buck hook up with a doe. All this in Bricsoe County, 2022 season.

There is definitely a 2nd rut, I've witnessed it and also see late fawns. If I had to put a number on it, it's 90% November 1st rut, the rest later.

Almost every buck we kill in northern Erath county is between 11-8 and 11-18.

Early November through Thanksgiving is always prime time. That said, I like late season too. Late season I'll see bucks that I haven't seen during the rut, and they're easier to pattern as they are beginning to settle into thier winter feeding patterns. That said, if I had to choose one or the other, I'd choose November.

I would take early to late Nov. in North TX, Cross Timbers and Western plains before Dec. any and every day of week. In Cross Timbers I have found rut to be hottest from 2nd week of Nov. through Thanksgiving. That said, the secondary rut around 1st-2nd week of Dec. until around Xmas can sometimes be very good too.

We have had success in Lamar County both times. I have seen bigger and more bucks from the 15th of December through New Years. Biggest buck taken on our property was shot December 26th of last year.

Whitetail? I'd stay with your current dates. Mule deer, I'd go with the later date (I think they have muley's in Hardeman County, right?).

Edit: Nevermind, I looked at the dates again and mule deer season would be over.

Went hunt just to the South & a Lil east of Hardeman Co. (in Throckmorton Co.), we have been on our lease since '95. 90 (Ninety)% of our Biggest Bucks have come from the Nov.15th-Nov.25th Timeframe- NO MATTER how much rain, what the Moon is doing, Cold Fronts vs No Cold Fronts, Acorn vs. No Acorns Yada, Yada, Yada......T'Giving is the Time in NW Tx,

We do see have a Week in Dec. (around the 12th-17th) where we see a few of the bigger bucks come out, but around that time they have been fighting for a while and their racks are busted up and/or missing a few points.

Hope this helps!!
