One of my buddies owns a south Texas high Fence ranch. I’ve never cared for high fenced hunting, however he says he seen some turkey on his place in the fall and wants me to come try to hunt them. Do any of you guys have experience hunting wild Turkey on a high fence ranch or have any input if you believe there is a chance some still may be around? I know Turkey get weird with fences and everything and I can imagine the fence being tall even more so. Any input would be great, trying to figure out if it would be worth my time to head down this weekend.

I’ve seen turkeys roost high in the tall trees around here. I doubt the fence matters much to them. Except maybe better habitat and less predators for nesting

Turkeys can get over a high fence easily enough. Most are just too lazy to do so when it comes to calling. I’ve watched frustrated Toms search over a 100yds length of a neighbors high fence trying to find a gap before just giving up and walking off. Flying over would’ve saved them 10min of time and a lot of headache, but sometimes they are stubborn like that.

Unless you’re hunting an ostrich, the fence isn’t going to be a barrier. They’ll come and go IF they want to.

The tallest fences do not mean a thing to turkeys. Out here where I live, they roost on electrical poles, the tallest ones, because we don't have any trees tall enough to suit them. Any natural or man-made barrier may cause them to hang up, but they can fly over fences of any height.

Right now I have a couple of hens nesting on my neighbor. I see them almost everyday fly over my HF to hit my corn feeder behind my house. Then back over the fence to nest.

Let me know if you want some help on the hunt. We went this weekend in Junction and had a great time. Good luck!

Like already said, fences don't mean anything to a motivated tom. I was on a lease years ago that had a high fence property across the creek. A couple times I had toms fly off the roost on the creek to the high fence property, but I was able to call them back across to me. Could hear them fly back over it.

Turkeys have wings. Wings allow them to fly. Flying means they can get over a fence. DUH!

Doesn't have to be a high fence for them to do that. I have seen them hang up at an old fence they walked through daily and not even have to duck their heads in lots of places.

For several years I helped with TYHP hunts on a high fence ranch. It was nothing to them to go over that fence when they wanted to and one roost was along the fence line in trees well taller than the fence. Numerous times I saw turkey fly over the fence and others hang up at it. Had one coming in one day that flew over the high fence and hung up at a barbed wire cross fence between us and him.

Do turkeys taken on a HF ranch still qualify for the book?

Turkey's will cross any barrier that they WANT to. That being said they will get hung up on a pole and not go around it if they don't want to.

In West Texas, the turkeys roost on the high line poles quite a bit. Never seen any fences that tall, but even if there were fences that tall, it would not slow the turkeys down. I sort of believe this thread was started with tongue in cheek.

At a friends high fence ranch he has had wild turkeys for years. They will fly into the trees and back in the high fence area. Lots of food for them and less chance of a predator getting them is my guess why they never leave.

Turkeys are stupid birds. The only think they have going for them is eyesight.
