At 11:00 last night, got a text from my son that they (son, DIL, granddaughter) had just summited the mountain. 19,340 feet!! Has been a bucket list item for them.

I'm really impressed by altitude athletes. I have hunted sheep and goats here in Idaho, up to 11,500, and spent some time in Colorado at 13-14K. Would love to go back to Kazakhstan and hunt Ibex and Sheep

That and Fuji would be the only two mountains I would consider climbing outside the US, and many in the US I wouldn't consider.

Kudos to your son and his fam. That is a cool trip!

Wow! That's quite a feat.

I really admire their ability. Last year I summited Driskill Mountain (the highest point in Louisiana) and it kicked my butt.

Impressive. My son runs daily at 7k to 10k on the mountain trails outa Salida Colo. 70 to 90 miles a week. Hes hiked and ran all the 14k peaks in Colo numerous times. Hes running a marathon in Ft Collins in a couple weeks to try and qualify for Boston Marathon. Ill have to ask him how his training would prepare him for 19k.

We took their advice and opted on a nine day trip when we did it. Paid off - slow and steady wins the race. I remember being on the summit and meeting some other climbers on a faster program. I was lucid and totally able to speak normally and carry on a conversation. The fast climbers looked catatonic and were not able to speak - saw one going done el rapido on a stretcher.

I ran the Kilimanjaro Half Marathon in February in Moshi, Tanzania. Kili was in the distance but fully visible. My buddy who I ran with has climbed the mountain twice, the second time a couple of years ago. I am seriously considering giving it a try.

FA: that's an amazing feat. I have a friend that does Ultra Marathons, and he's a beast. I can't imagine 100 mile runs!!!
