This was opening weekend in the north zone. On the way in Fri afternoon I saw a few hens in one of our pastures so I knew we at least had some around. Trees hadn't greened up yet and they had lock jaw. They'll usually gobble on the roost then go silent, but didn't even get that. Made it impossible to run and gun. So, did what I had to do. Before daylight I setup a popup blind on the edge of the field I saw them in with a couple hen decoys and called lightly every 20 to 30 minutes. He came in struttin and drummin but not gobbling with his hens that wanted to see what the intruder hens (decoys) were doing.

I always take Rosie with me. Even when I'm runnin and gunnin, she knows what's going on and the pointer in her takes over. She freezes when birds come in. She hasn't gotten busted yet, but I always use decoys to keep their attention off us.
