This is Rip owned by Duck_Hunter. Every now and then when the situation is right I take on a dog in training.

Rip has been here about 1.5 months and I believe he has done a great job and come a long way. We’ve tackled on lead obedience, intro to water, intro to gun fire, steadiness and almost through force fetch. His owner did a good job of putting him in a great place to learn and advance in his training. He’s well on his way to becoming a nice waterfowl dog.

We couldn’t be happier. You got more out of him before I left from dropping him off than I was able to in the four months since we brought him home.

Nice! Teaching them good, they want to spit that bumper out and shake the water out their ear, can't let them do that. That requires constant reminding. I like that big bumper too, they don't chomp (mouth) it as much.

Have always enjoyed your and Brady’s dog training/hunting posts, pictures and videos. Excited to experience first hand what a properly trained duck dog is like to work with.

It does look like that ear is bothering him, probably need to keep an eye on that and talk to your vet. Reminds me of my girl Molly (RIP 2015), she did that a lot when she got out of the water, tilting that head, you can tell the water really bothering them. And she would get ear infection every now and then.

He doesn’t have any ear issues, just was wanting to shake and drop the bumper.

I’ve never seen a dog go in the water with a check cord attached to collar. Interesting.

I do it all the time, probably every dog I’ve ever trained…especially when I know there is zero chance of it getting hung on anything.

Hell, half the pros use a check cord on water T/Swim-by to stop a dog in water. I don’t because by that time I don’t need it. But when you are teaching a pup to come to heel and not run off on you I pretty much keep a lead on them at all times.

Not really any different than being on land. I do use biothane ones if they are in water, but I use them a lot on land too.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.
