I’ve been fortunate to hunt a lot of species all over the state and a few spots across the country. At 50 years old, this is my first spring Tom!! I’ve killed plenty in the fall, but I have never called one up.

He was not. I hunted hard all of opening weekend and never heard a sound. We did see a few toms but they were well out of range and no real way to get closer. I hunted again this Saturday morning until about 10AM and again, never heard a sound. I had some things to do during the day and didn't make it back out until almost 5PM. On my walk in, I thought I heard a gobble. I hit the call a few times and didn't get a response. I wrote it off and got to my spot and set up. After about 15 minutes, I did hear one sound off in the direction I walked in form. I called and no response. I changed my decoys up a bit so I could be in a better position. The same bird sounded off a couple more times but never came in. Eventually there was a tom that gobbled back to the east. I hit my call and as usual, he didn't respond. About 15 minutes later, I just happened to catch something out of the corner of my eye. I didn't really think much about it, but something didn't look right. As I reached for my binoculars, he moved and I new it was on. He eventually made it behind some heavy brush and I was able to get my gun up. He was 35-40 yards out and that was it!

Well now you have gone and done it. You are hooked. Just wait till one starts a conversation with you. It will get to where you won't even care if you get a shot, being able to talk back and forth and get him to come in to the call is reward enough.

We can't hunt turkey at our place in Navarro County. During Turkey season, i will often go out and call them in just for practice, so I get what you mean.

Great job. We have trouble getting them to come to us, they always seem to be henned up. THey'll answer all day long but for the last couple of years just can't get one to come in. Maybe I've lost my touch.
