Hey everyone,

I think I'm going to do a squirrel hunting trip in May. Looking at a 4 day weekend. I live in NW Houston, but am open to travel. I can get a public lands endorsement for $48, but I'm not sure where to go. I'd also be willing to pay a day lease fee of $50 or so if someone has a pecan orchard or something in a river bottom with tons of squirrels and would grant me access. I'd prefer to camp. I also hold a lifetime license in OK so I may just go to one of the public hunting areas in SE OK.

Let me know if you have any suggestions on a good place to shoot some bushy tails.

If you get your AHP for $48 that should open up plenty of land in the region north and east of you.

You could sit in my backyard and get a limit in a few minutes.

Call San Saba Chamber of Commerce to see if there is any Pecan Orchards left to hunt in.

Squirrels?

I live in town and am loaded with big oaks. The whole neighborhood is. Some years back a squirrel gnawed a hole in the eave of my house and chewed on some under the roof electric wires. That got expensive.

I called the city and was told that they could trap and relocate squirrels but wouldn’t know when they caught the right one. I understand that.

I bought some Colibri shorts with no powder and started killing every squirrel that got on the oaks on my property. That cartridge, with no powder, is whisper quiet. Neighbors found out and a couple did the same. Then the city found out and cops had a talk with me about discharging firearms in the city limits. I showed them the damage and electrician bills. They were nice guys and understood but said the law was pretty clear about shooting firearms in town.

I asked if they could tell me what the components of a bullet were. Yep, case, primer, powder and bullet. So, if one of those components was not present it wasn’t a bullet? That’s right. So, I disassembled a cartridge and showed them that I had no powder. They were fascinated and asked where I got them.

Bottom line is that they said it was still illegal and dammit, don’t go out of your fenced back yard if I ever did it again. And, no they couldn’t tell me who the neighbor was who squealed on me.

A couple of days later a city cop came to my house and asked about my ammo. I showed him and the bottom line was that some cops wanted to get some so they could practice trigger squeeze without going to the range.
