Machinery Pete has a video of the record selling 4440's. Most expensive was 2000 hours and $75k eek2

They were $44k new on the lot in 1980.

I guess you sold the one you had in the classifieds? For the non-tractor folks what's the difference in the two?

They are both in the "Sound Guard" era of John Deere tractors. The body panels all match, the cab interior is all the same. The one I sold is a 77' model. Listed as 130 HP. This is an 81' model, listed as 140 HP. Few things got tweaked on the engine. I didn't need any more horse power. I just needed a more friendly to use transmission. The kicker is, the 77' model could have had this transmission. My theory is, they had extra Synchrorange transmissions on the shelf and used them up till they were gone. Nothing wrong with the Synchrorange transmission for certain jobs. But for all that I am doing with one tractor, a transmission change was needed.

I really believe that is honest.

It all works, everything! Serial number is a 1981 model (I think)

Quad Range transmission. I'm done tractor buying the rest of my life. This was my Elanor, for a tractor. Been saving money for years to get one of these. Made in Iowa U.S.A. By Gawd!

I don't know much about tractors but that's a good looking tractor!

Looks great. I like those John Deere's I bet that bent glass is expensive to replace.

The whole thing is 42 years old.

Shed kept tractor. It really does them good to keep them out of the sun.

We had an old 4020 with the synchro shift. Pretty good little tractor, no cab though.

I thought you could read better than that.

I read just fine. Poppa mentioned the powershift, which I think were all 8 spd until the 50 or 55 series. The QR was better than the 8 spd but the 15spd, on the 50 or 55s, was awesome and filled the gaps better than the QR. plowing with the QR was always a pain because C1 was better than B2 but that left you nowhere to go if you hit hard ground. I’ve driven older JDs with the synchro and am familiar there as well.

Nothing says mashed fingers like rebuilding the JD Synchro. This one was on my 4320 which was the predecessor to the 4430 which was the last one before they changed the engine and did major upgrades and called it the 4440.

Looks like she’s just getting broke in good.

Those hours are a dream! Congrats on that bad boy. My old farm boss ran three different 4440s over the years, they all cleared 10k hours easily. Last one sold with 13k hours and still hadn't been into the motor. They still have a 4455 running a round baler, it has ~8k hours and shows no signs of stopping.

A good friend of mine says the shop manual tells that these need an in-frame overhaul at 10,000 hours. He has done it several times and says I'm perfectly capable. I already volunteered him to come supervise when the time comes.

I looked at 4455's. Same guy said those were the pinnacle of the Sound Guard tractors. But, they were significantly more money, and I didn't have that much saved up. And I don't want a loan.

I just left Deere getting all the filters for it, and one of two thermostats. I still need to order the second thermostat and go get oil and hydraulic fluid, as well as antifreeze and radiator flush. Gonna be a day or more in the shop, but I know it'll be squared away.

Like you said, this one is so nice it's going to outlast you! I know you found a good deal all the way around.

Nice looking old tractor. I wanted to go with and older tractor, but for my area 4x4 is a must for damn near anything and finding older 4x4 tractors is tuff. Hopefully some day I’ll have more use for some others and get to add to my collection.
