Hey everyone,

Just moved to Austin area. Any good spots for hog hunting on public land? Or a place that farmers ask for hunters' help with pigs?

Thanks all,
BR

Granger Wildlife Management Area would be close. I believe it's archery only and you can find it on the TPWD website.

The days of just finding farmers that will let you come on their land and kill hogs is just about over with. Too much money to be made off hogs.

And too many idiots who didn't respect landowner wishes/rules and abused the generosity.

Don't forget the use of helicopters to control numbers.

However there are lots of WMA's that have plenty of feral hogs. Even corps USACE properties. The snivel are two things, weapons requirements and how you can hunt. No night hunting. Generally no baiting. So you end up hunting the thickest thorn brush you can find hoping to locate sleeping hogs in the daytime. Short range jump shooting which most archers are not up to and that leaves generally short quick shooting at close range. Sometimes shotguns with slugs are the only allowed means and no buckshot allowed. On a recent "draw" hunt I went on at Hagerman Wildlife refuge a short time before the hunt the people in charge had the place shot up by people in helicopters most likely paid for by our draw money. Their plan was for us to give an after action report on how effective the aerial gunners were and let me tell you they were very effective, found hundreds of recently killed hogs. That said if you are willing to work into some truly thick thornbrush in the middle of the day near water sources you just might find a hog or two. Not saying you will get a decent shot.
