Now for the rest of the story…

With my animals in the salt, I waited for my compadres to get their animals. At this point we had 3 stags down with a few that were wounded but ultimately recovered. Our group was also successful in taking 3 fallow deer and 3 black buck, along with a sheep and a Russian boar with big cutters.

The trophy quality was simply beyond belief, due to Covid they had effectively had another 3 seasons to grow ( 2022 was open but the number of hunters were way down due to ongoing Covid policy was was lifted in late April). We ended up all taking Gold Medal stags with 4 going over 400”….the biggest being an estimated 14 years old! Incredible for free ranging animals.

Oh, and the big stag I had been seeing; I got word yesterday that the monarch had fallen….he taped out at 500 4/8”! I am fairly confident i could have gotten a shot at him with a bow while setting at a waterhole, but still hunting with a bow is just so much more fun. As with most archery hunting, you have to take what’s presented to you, as the equipment limitations dictate you more than likely will not get to pick and choose like you could with a rifle.

This trip was a huge learning experience, it was interesting to see how these animals behave in almost the exact opposite manner that game does down here. Had I shot an elk, he would have ran into the thickest, nastiest cover he could find. Also, if Charly hasn’t had rushed over to the site of the shot, he would not have seen the stag crossing the field, which I believe would have cost us the animal. Bowhunting 101 dictates you wait 15-20 min before going to the shot site which would have been devastating in this instance.

When wounded, animals would run up hill and away from water, which again, is the opposite of what is considered normal animal behavior.

All in all, it was a fantastic trip, one that I hope to make again in the near future. The culture there is so laid back and relaxed, the people are truly happy, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the hustle and bustle, fill your day with as many activities as possible culture here.

Thanks to everyone who followed along, and feel free to ask any questions via PM, I’ll give as much info as I know.

That's just an awesome hunt and write up. Great stag and buffalo. Man Charly is a big dude. I'm pretty sure I made that same jump trip from Santa Rosa back to B.A. on back end of a trip almost 20 years ago. The plane had seats in front half and the back half was open cargo with locals sitting back there with hand made basket/cages with chickens and guineas. Flight was a hoot and filled with cigarette smoking which was allowed back then. B.A. then was a interesting city, dollar very strong, ate and drank like kings and bucket list to go back for a stag.

Thanks for sharing!

Guy has to be 6’5. He hunts in the Argentinian version of Hey Dudes and he can move like a ghost thru the brush. An incredible PH and a joy to be around. Loves to joke and kid around.

I’ll have to see if I can find the article but a few years back he had a hunter get gored by a Buffalo, during the attack the hunter lost the rifle and he ended up having to wrestle the bull by hand until they found the rifle. Jacked him up pretty good as well but they both survived.

We flew into Santa Rosa from BA but took a van back. Only 1 flight a day goes into Santa Rosa currently.

Between flights we ate at a high end steakhouse. 7 of us, few bottles of wine, several beers, appetizers, steaks, the whole 9.

The bill was $118.

That’s bananas. Without seeing him, I’d doubt that. The pictures are enough to convince me, though. He looks like he could rastle a buffalo.

What a truly great experience! Congrats on one hell of a hunt.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

A great write up. I appreciate your sharing of this experience and some of the self deprecating comments. I think you could've written script for Curt Gowdy's American Sportsman TV show which I used to watch religiously.

Awesome trip! Water Buffalo are incredibly tough. I shot one here in Texas years ago and he took 4 shots from a .375 as well (using 300 gr. Swift A-Frames). At the time, I thought a .375 was a "big" gun. After seeing how tough they are, the next Water Buffalo I shoot will be with a caliber that starts with a "4" or "5".

They have a .416 they use as backup rifle and they said it still normally takes 3-4 shots.

A .375 isn’t anything to sneeze at, it was amazing hitting him on the shoulder with it and getting zero reaction from him

Saw your guide on a hunting show this morning. That’s a face you can’t forget.
